Good Food, Good Cause, Good Cops!

This Thursday, some of Manchester's Finest will become some of the finest bus boys in town...all to benefit Special Olympics. And you can be a part of it!

I’m a woman of few talents. While I like to read, and write, I am dreadfully lacking otherwise in the world of arts, or even arts and crafts in general.

I don’t sing (not well anyway), I don’t dance, I don’t sew, or paint, or scrapbook. I did learn to cook, but only because certain members of my household  had a way of looking at me forlornly and saying, “What’s for dinner?”

However, as the kids have gotten older, rushing in and out of the house on the way to jobs, or social events, or simply to avoid being asked to unload the dishwasher, I have uncovered a hidden talent-and that is avoiding cooking by saying “Honey, why don’t we go out to eat tonight?”  It’s a technique that sometimes works with my husband, especially when he remembers he polished off the last of the leftovers the night before and will be subjected to “freezer food” if he doesn’t acquiesce.

But I KNEW it would work this week when I said “Honey, why don’t we go out to eat this Thursday at Tucker’s and help the raise money for Special Olympics?”  A good cause, a delicious steak and an opportunity to have one of Manchester’s finest refill our water glasses?  I knew it was a slam-dunk!

That’s because it’s time for the Fifth Annual Clean Up For Special Olympics.  Since 2006, Manchester police officers have volunteered their time to clear tables, refill drinks, collect donations and sell Torch Run Merchandise to raise money for the Missouri Special Olympics. The proprietors of West Restaurant  are once again hosting this event, and generously donating a portion of the evening’s  receipts to Special Olympics as well.

We have attended this event every year since it began and it is a really fun-and delicious-way to support an outstanding program. And each year we see more and more Manchester residents enjoy a night out on the town and help the hardworking men and women of the Manchester PD raise money for a great cause.

In the past four years they have raised nearly $25,000 through the generosity of the fine citizens of Manchester.  I hope you’ll plan on joining the Manchester Police Department, your friends and neighbors and the good folks at Tucker’s from 5 to 10 p.m. Thursday for an evening of fine dining, good deeds and a lot of fun.  Tucker’s is located at 14282 Manchester Road, just east of 141.  We’ll see you there!

If you are unable to attend, and would like to make a donation or purchase a Special Olympics Torch Run t-shirt, please contact Officer Dave Ebert at 636-227-1410, extension 396 or by email at debert@manchestermo.gov.
