40-Foot Flagpole Approved for St. Nicholas Life Center

Now that St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Family Life Center's request for a taller-than-accepted flagpole has been approved, find out when they hope to fly the flag.

It was a matter of five feet: The allowable flagpole height in the city of Town and Country's code cannot exceed 35 feet.

But St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Family Life Center was able to obtain an exception from the board of aldermen this month to install a 40-foot pole that would highlight the American flag, according to an STL Today report.

Michael Ferretti, a member of St. Nicholas's Capital Committee, told Patch a committee of veterans who served in the Korean War and World War II had been working since last summer to fundraise for the project. The flag would be a way to honor veterans and those who serve, Ferretti shared with Patch.

Ferretti said the ideal flagpole height for visibility from the highway would be 40 feet, an obstacle that would require approval from Town and Country aldermen for a variance. After gaining approval earlier in July, Ferretti said construction on the project will take months.

With a few more permits to acquire and installation time, Ferretti said they hope to have a ceremony and dedication for the flag by Veterans Day. Ferretti added that lights would be installed to highlight the flag at the crest of the hill on the Family Life Center's property.
