Some areas saw as much as 6 inches of snow, sleet and frozen precipitation.
A Thursday forecast of snow, sleet and other freezing precipitation that largely followed through as predicted will see Missouri Department of Transportation and other municipal street crews working into Friday to get ready for the morning commute. That, along with a National Weather Service forecast that called for additional nighttime snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch, has led many school districts, including Parkway, Rockwood and Ft. Large snow flakes fell across the St. Louis area Tuesday. MoDOT officials are warning drivers to use caution as they head home Tuesday evening.
The Missouri Department of Transportation said road crews took to the streets around the St. Louis area Tuesday treating roads with salt and chemicals and plowing as needed. MoDOT officials are warning drivers to use caution as they head home Tuesday evening, especially on ramps and bridges. The National Weather Service reports there could be accumulation of up to one inch of snow in some parts of the St. Louis area Tuesday. Temperatures are expected to reach a high of around 20 degrees and light wind is also in the forecast. According to KMOV.com, several areas received at least a half-inch of accumulation as the narrow band of snow hit St. Louis and St. Charles counties beginning late morning. The National Weather Service forecast for Christmas Day is one Santa will like: "Snow likely. Cloudy, with a low around 25. Blustery, with a north wind 15 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Strong winds are to blame for a tree crashing down on power lines on Ballas Road. Power was out in the area and the road was closed in both directions for hours.
Town and Country police tell Patch strong winds caused a tree to fall onto power lines knocking out power and closing Ballas Road in both directions around 4:45 p.m. Thursday. Police said the incident happened where Ballas Road intersects with Hawthorne Estates, which is between Manchester and Clayton roads. Traffic was rerouted as Ameren Missouri crews worked for hours to remove the tree and restore power. Police tell Patch the tree was removed and the road reopened to traffic around 10:00 p.m., Thursday. According to Ameren's outage map late Thursday night, some homes were still without power in the area.

MoDOT is alerting drivers not to be alarmed if they see snow plows on the roads Wednesday. Severe weather is not on the way, MoDOT is performing a winter weather drill.
The Missouri Department of Transportation warns drivers they may see snow plows on the roads Wednesday. It's part of a statewide snow drill taking place throughout the day, MoDOT stated in a news release. (For instant news updates follow Patch on Facebook and Twitter.) MoDOT officials said they began preparing for the area's first winter storm months ago. In rural areas, crews will take to the streets after 8 a.m. and in urban areas, the drill will begin after 9 a.m., according to MoDOT. MoDOT is now more concerned with Tuesday morning's rush hour than Monday evening, but crews are on the roads and ready.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter weather advisory for the St. Louis area that remais in effect until midnight. Meteorologists are forecasting accumulations between 2 and 4 inches for the metro area. According to the NWS, the latest indications are that the heaviest snowfall will occur during the late afternoon and evening hours. Snow with some sleet accumulation is possible, with the storm expected to end late Monday. However, Kara Price, a spokesperson for the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), tells Patch that crews are now expecting the winter storm to run through Tuesday morning's rush hour. This accident happened Friday night during the winter weather advisory across the metro area.
Above are photos of an accident at the intersection of Manchester Road and Enchanted Parkway. It happened around 9 p.m. Friday. Only one car appeared to be involved and it appeared to have run into a sign. The accident happened during Friday evening's freezing rain. A city truck was on scene spreading what appeared to to salt around the scene of the accident.

The St. Louis metropolitan area is under a winter weather advisory beginning at 3 p.m. Friday and lasting through midnight. According to the National Weather Service, there will be a light, freezing drizzle throughout the area. An icy glaze could cover the streets during the advisory, making travel potentially treacherous.
