Priest From Manchester's St. Joseph Parish in Rome For Naming of New Pope

Father Don Anstoetter, who grew up at St. Joseph’s Parish in Manchester, is in Rome as the conclave gets underway, KMOV reports.

According to a KMOV report, Father Don Anstoetter, who grew up at St. Joseph’s Parish in Manchester, is in Vatican City with other priests from the St. Louis Archdiocese. Anstoetter is a seminary student in Rome, according to KMOV's report. (Watch entire KMOV report here.) As previously reported by Patch, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of the Roman Catholic archdiocese of New York and a native of Ballwin, was immediately mentioned as a possible successor when news broke in February that Pope Benedict XVI would resign. Dolan is also in Rome as the conclave gets underway. A new pope could be named as early as Tuesday.

St. Louis Clergy React to Pope's Resignation

As news of Pope Benedict XVI's resignation spreads, former parish priest Cardinal Timothy Dolan of Ballwin is one name being discussed as the next possible pope.

The surprise announcement this morning that Pope Benedict XVI would resign the papacy at the end of the month immediately brought to mind the name of perhaps the most powerful Catholic in the United States as a possible successor. Ballwin native and archbishop of the Roman Catholic archdiocese of New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, was immediately mentioned as a possible successor when the College of Cardinals meets in March to choose the next pope. Archbishop Dolan Protests Healthcare Coverage with eBook

West County native, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, archbishop of New York, released an original eBook, True Freedom: On Protecting Human Dignity and Religious Freedom (Image Books, June 19) in conjunction with the U.S. bishops’ call for Catholics and others to protest U.S. health care mandates for contraception and other policies they deem threaten religious freedom. West County Native Now Cardinal in Catholic Church

With family reportedly watching the ceremony in Rome, West County native Timothy Dolan officially became a cardinal Saturday.

As previously reported by Patch, the St. Louis native who served the Catholic archdiocese as its auxiliary bishop in 2001 was named one of the church's newest cardinals by Pope Benedict XVI in January. Timothy M. Dolan, was born in St. Louis, attended church as a youth at Ballwin's Holy Infant Roman Catholic Church and "began his high school seminary education at St. Louis Preparatory Seminary South in Shrewsbury,"according to the New York archdiocese website. He has been the archbishop of New York since February 2009. A St. Louis native, Timothy Dolan was an auxiliary bishop in the St. Louis Catholic archdiocese from 2001-02. He's family of the Reverend Pamela Dolan, rector at Town and Country's Church of the Good Shepherd.

Dolan, was born in St. Louis, attended church as a youth at Ballwin's Holy Infant Roman Catholic Church and "began his high school seminary education at St. Louis Preparatory Seminary South in Shrewsbury,"according to the New York archdiocese website. He has been the archbishop of New York since February 2009. The Vatican named Dolan to the College of Cardinals on Friday, according to the New York Times.
