The Chesterfield Republican spoke with Patch on Election night in West County.
As election returns came in on Tuesday night, political campaigns from across the state held watch parties around St. Louis to gather with their supporters on the big night. Chesterfield-area State Senator Jane Cunningham made the rounds to some of the events, including Lt. Governor Peter Kinder's gathering at the Drury Inn. Cunningham, who ended up a casualty of the redistricting process, decided not to run for the State Senate in another district, and also stayed out of the Second District U.S. House race. In an interview that came before winners were formally declared, she talked with Patch about the Presidential race, the U.S. Senate contest and her own future. Sen. Claire McCaskill and Rep. Todd Akin stuck to their talking points during the debate at Clayton High School.
(Sign up here for the FREE Patch Newsletter, including Breaking News Alerts.) In the final debate between Missouri Senate candidates Claire McCaskill and Todd Akin, sharply worded barbs flew as the candidates pushed their talking points. Sen. McCaskill painted the race as one between a moderate vs. extremist. Rep. Akin pushed McCaskill as someone who votes with President Barack Obama "98 percent of the time." The debate, moderated by Mike Bush of KSDK and held at Clayton High School, featured one question each from a panel of local media, the Clayton Chamber of Commerce and a Clayton High School journalism student. Questions from the audience were then read. Akin's "legitimate rape" comment from August, which dominated the political scene …

Rep. Todd Akin called his opponent's debate behavior 'unladylike' in an interview with the Kansas City Star.
Rep. Todd Akin has made another gaffe in his bid to unseat Sen. Claire McCaskill in November. (Sign up here for the FREE Patch Newsletter, including Breaking News Alerts.) Akin announced on Monday that he was staying the race, despite weeks of negative coverage and the rejection of the National Republican party following his comments on Fox 2 regarding legitimate rape. On Thursday, in an interview with the Kansas City Star, Akin referred to his opponent as "unladylike" in her debate with him last week. According to the story, Akin said: I think we have a very clear path to victory, and apparently Claire McCaskill thinks we do, too, because she was very aggressive at the debate, which was quite different than it was when she ran against …

Conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly said Akin's "six-second mistake" will be forgotten.
Approximately 200 women from the St. Louis area came together Tuesday night in Chesterfield, at Pillar of the Valley, to show their support for U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin. They were part of a group called Missouri Women Standing with Todd Akin. The event marked the Republican nominee's first campaign stop in St. Louis since he returned to the campaign trail after regrouping his campaign amid calls from many in the GOP to drop out of the race against Democrat Claire McCaskill. Akin, a U.S. Representative from Wildwood, has been under fire following his controversial comments about pregnancy and "legitimate rape" last month in a television interview with FOX2. “We felt like women are able to have the capacity to better translate (…

While delivering 40,000 petitions to Akin's office Wednesday, ADVOCATES of Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region ask: “If you think Todd Akin’s Missouri record is bad, what would life be like under a Vice President Ryan?”
ADVOCATES of Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri asked people to imagine what life would be like if U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin represented every woman in America, because they believe that’s exactly what’s at stake in this election. To punctuate their opposition to Rep. Akin, R-Wildwood, a dozen supporters of the ADVOCATES' group delivered 40,000 petitions to Akin's Ballwin office on Wednesday, as earlier reported by Patch. Many ADVOCATES' representatives wore pink to Akin's office and held signs that stated: "I'm watching and I will vote." "It's horrifying to label some rapes not 'legitimate,'" the petition reads. "Your comments show just how little compassion you have for the millions of survivors of …

The U.S. Senate candidate has been under fire since his weekend comments on "forcible rape," despite an apology for the remarks. His spokesperson confirms the threats are real.
KTVI-TV is reporting that Todd Akin, the Wildwood Republican who has been under intense pressure since his weekend comments on "forcible rape" threatened to derail his U.S. Senate bid against Claire McCaskill, is now fending off more than calls to quit the race. (Sign up here for the FREE Patch Newsletter, including Breaking News Alerts.) Thursday evening, Patch received the following confirmation from Steve Taylor, Akin's district communication director: “I can verify that the Capitol police are working with an outside law enforcement agency regarding threatening contact with our official office. The office of Congressman Akin has received threats of rape of his official staff, family and the Congressman himself along with suggestions …
Wagner responds to Senate candidate Todd Akin's controversial statements regarding rape and pregnancy earlier this week.
In the days after U.S. Rep. (Sign up here for the FREE Patch Newsletter, including Breaking News Alerts.) From Missouri Republican leaders to presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, several discussions regarding Akin's withdrawal continue past the bow-out deadline earlier this week. But one notable Republican had remained silent on the issue.
