Is the iPhone 5 One of the Worst Smartphones?

Consumer Reports thinks so, apparently. Do you agree that Apple is slipping behind its rivals in the smartphone market?

A recent issue of Consumer Reports that ranked the top smartphones in the U.S. placed the iPhone 5 behind its rivals among many carriers and it didn't even crack the top three for Verizon.  (For instant news updates follow Patch on Facebook and Twitter.) Business Insider picked up on the magazine's story and speculated that while the iPhone has been a "mind-boggling" success for the past five years, other smartphone makers are starting to catch up, pointing to the success of the Samsung Galaxy S3 among others.  The worry is that Apple will soon be eclipsed as the already hyper-competitive and ridiculous lucrative smartphone market continues to heat up. Of course, slipping from complete dominance to near-dominance isn't entirely bad, plus …

I have owned each of the Apple Phones. I was intending to purchase the next generation BUT then Apple made a mistake and made/designed the IPhone 5. The longer design just turned me off. I would have purchased one if the width had gone along with its height. This appears to be what most buyers are saying with the success of Samsung. NOW THEY APPEAR to be making a big mistake by planning to change…   more ›

5-1-1 Traffic Reports End In STL

Tech company calls it quits; local office closes.

For drivers in the St. Louis region who took out their cell phones and punched in 5-1-1 to check for traffic delays before starting a trip—they will have to find an alternative beginning February 1. The MoDOT service for the St. Louis area ends January 31. For the past five years MoDOT 5-1-1 has been provided by Navteq, a computer mapping and traffic reporting service owned by the Finnish company Nokia. The contract between MoDOT and Navteq expired last June, but the service continued on a month-to-month basis. In December, Navteq announced it was discontinuing its traffic reporting service and closing regional offices across the country. An editor with the St. Louis Navteq office told Patch that MoDOT wants to restore the 5-1-1 service in…

Phone Stacking Game Finds Followers in St. Louis Area

The new hot trend in dining has nothing to do with food.

We've all done it. Here’s my story: Last week, I was waiting for the boyfriend to arrive for our sushi date. Bored, I watched couples at the tables around me, but one in particular caught my eye. Two young women with full plates of tempura and bright pink-and-green cocktails spent their entire meal engrossed in (not each other, not their food, not their drinks, but...) their phones. I swear they hardly said a word to each other the entire 45 minutes I was waiting. (I was super early, he was a little late. Typical.) As they left and the boyfriend arrived, I filled him in on the their ghastly behavior, my voice dripping with judgment. After dinner, as we sat a bar waiting for our movie to start, I was halfway into a work email when my …

AT&T Launches Upgrade Website as Lawsuit Blocks Merger With T-Mobile

AT&T recently launched "Focus: St. Louis" to show customers how it is improving wireless coverage, especially if allowed to merge with T-Mobile. That merger, however, is being blocked by an antitrust suit.

AT&T has launched a new website called Focus: St. Louis that gives its customers the ability to see upgrades to their wireless system on a city by city basis. AT&T said the site is first for the industry. In addition to showing system upgrades, the site shows AT&T WI-FI hotspots and the locations of AT&T stores. Focus: St. Louis is one of eight hyper-local sites across the nation. Atlanta; Dallas-Fort Worth; Houston; Kansas City; Tampa-St. Petersburg, FL; Miami-Fort Lauderdale; Indianapolis; and Philadelphia also have Focus sites for their areas. The upgrades displayed currently for the Town and County-Manchester Patch are two connection upgrades in Manchester and two connection upgrades plus a capacity upgrade for Town and Country. The …
