Parkway West Cannot Stop Summit in Frustrating Defeat

Rockwood Summit uses a well-balanced offense to notch a 38-7 victory at Longhorn Stadium on Friday night.

Parkway West football coach Jeff Duncan knew that Rockwood Summit had two dangerous offensive players. Unfortunately for Duncan, his Longhorns football team did not have any answers for those two players. Ian McIntosh ran for 135 yards and three scores, while Joe Schenck caught a pair of touchdown passes to lead Summit to a 38-7 victory at Longhorn Stadium on Friday night. “They made some big plays for them and we had a tough time stopping them,” Duncan said of McIntosh and Schenck. Summit spoiled the home opener for West, which was playing its first game on the brand new artificial field stadium turf. McIntosh had just 14 carries, but was the most productive player for a Summit team that generated 338 yards of total offense. The 5-foot-8…

Season Opener: Parkway West Blows Past U City

The two teams total more than 900 yards of total offense, and combine for 11 touchdowns.

If the first play of the season can be used as any kind of indicator, then the 2011 football campaign is going to mighty exciting for the Parkway West Longhorns. That’s certainly the impression West made during Friday’s season opener at University City High’s Muhl-Schemmer Stadium, when junior Ryan DeMuri ran back the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown, which sparked the Longhorns to a 47-33 win over the host Lions. “It does relax you (when you score on the opening kickoff),” West head coach Jeff Duncan said. “But we told our kids, the game’s far from over. (University City) came back on us a little bit. But it was a big play. We’ll take those any time we can get them.” DeMuri’s brilliant return was only the first of several big …

Longhorns' Coach Hopes for Bounce-Back Year

Parkway West's head coach hopes to carry a strong finish last season into fall 2011.

Following two straight losing seasons, Jeff Duncan thinks this season will demonstrate a return-to-form for the Parkway West High School football program. Duncan, entering his third season as the Longhorns' head coach, said his team has high expectations for the upcoming season. “We’ve got five or six kids who have started since they were sophomores and we return (with) nine offensive starters (from last year),” Duncan said. Offense: Junior J.C. DeMuri takes over for Class of 2011 graduate Dominique Atkins at quarterback. DeMuri played some last year, completing 22 of 61 passes for 216 yards and five interceptions. Duncan said DeMuri is a lot more confident this season. Offensive coordinator Jamie Martin is a former pro quarterback who …

Town and Country Teen Makes Splash as Marathon Swimmer

Sarah Findlay of the Clayton/Shaw Park Tideriders performs well in the 2011 USA Swimming Open Water National 5K Championships in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Few would argue that St. Louis is a Mecca for the sport of marathon swimming. For starters, the sport usually requires convenient access to an ocean, something that’s impossible in the landlocked Midwest. But an athlete with a strong drive to compete can be an unstoppable force and Sarah Findlay and Taylor Maurer of the Clayton/Shaw Park Tideriders performed well this summer in the 2011 USA Swimming Open Water National 5K Championships in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Maurer, a resident of Ballwin who attends Parkway West High School, placed 17th at the Championships on June 12. A 5K race equals 3.1 miles. “I went out fast and I just held it,” Maurer said regarding her solid finish. No stranger to distance swimming, the Ballwin resident swims the 1…
