Parkway Central Grad Meyer Shining at Webster University

Katy Meyer is not only a top Division III basketball player at Webster, but has excelled as a student and as a leader.

In 2007, Katy Meyer graduated from Parkway Central with a 4.2 grade-point average. She was also the starting center on the girls' basketball team, averaging 10 points and 7 rebounds per game. Meyer, 5-foot, 10-inches, was recruited by several schools outside the St. Louis area. But instead of leaving town, she ended up without a basketball scholarship while rewriting the record books at Webster University. "I had to ask myself if college was about basketball or academics. If I took the basketball away from it, Webster had the best academics of the schools I was looking at," Meyer said after scoring 16 points in a Webster victory over Augustana College on Nov. 27. Parkway Central Hopes to Carry Momentum Into New Season

Head coach Todd Pannett is expecting to have an exciting team this year following a strong finish in 2009-10.

Last year's Parkway Central boys basketball team was clearly on the young side, starting three sophomores and two juniors. But they improved as the season wore on, finishing with a 9-18 record. Coach Todd Pannett is expecting to have an exciting team this year. "We finished strong last year," said Pannett. "We lost our district game on a shot at the buzzer. This year I have the top eight players all returning." Junior Zach Carel returns for his third season as the Colts starting point guard. At 6-foot-1, Carel led the Colts in scoring last season averaging 15 points a game. "We moved Zach up to the starting position the third game of his freshmen season," said Pannett.
