Tigers have had a strong showing in the NFL, especially since the 1970s.
No doubt, with a 5-7 season, the Mizzou Tigers had a disappointing launch in the Southeast Conference (SEC). The inability to get six wins and earn a birth in a bowl game was painful. (For instant news updates follow Patch on Facebook and Twitter.) Still, the Tigers have had rich and proud heritage, especially when earning post-season recognition and putting players into the National Football League. Presently, the Tigers have three quarterbacks on active rosters: Blaine Gabbert, Jacksonville; Brad Smith, Buffalo (QB and wide receiver); and Chase Daniel, New Orleans. Jeremy Maclin, Philadelphia, and Denario Alexander, San Diego, have become two premier receivers in the NFL. Sean Weatherspoon, linebacker for Atlanta, is a key member of the …

Westminster Christian Academy junior Shane Benes, son of former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Andy Benes, has verbally committed to play baseball at University of Missouri Columbia. (For instant news updates follow Patch on Facebook and Twitter.) Father, Andy, confirmed the news of the Westminster Wildcats shortstop's decison. "Shane did commit to Mizzou. He is very excited to be going to such a great school with the opportunity to play SEC baseball," stated Andy Benes in an email. "Shane is very excited to be a Mizzou Tiger. It will be a great place for him to pursue his degree and compete athletically in the SEC conference. The University of Missouri-themed store quietly opened Aug. 29, but with a new sign installed Wednesday, it's set for a grand opening next Thursday.
West County shoppers now have a new location to pick up their favorite black and gold, tiger-striped merchandise! (For instant news updates follow Patch on Facebook and Twitter.) It's probably a lament often heard in Mizzou Nation: Where can I lay may hands on a bottle opener that plays "Fight Tigers" when I pop the top of my brew? The answer is here at last. The Mizzou Store opened quietly in the Chesterfield Valley on Aug. 29, but has its official grand opening next week. And if you visit the store at 10 THF Boulevard, near the eastern end of the massive retail strip mall off of Highway 40, prepare yourself: You might overload on black and gold. There are T-shirts and sweatshirts, bottle cozys and blankets. There is even that bottle …

Mizzou faces top-10 ranked South Carolina in an SEC showdown.
Mizzou has a football history with Steve Spurrier and his South Carolina Gamecocks. For one, Spurrier was the quarterback in 1966 who almost engineered a Florida comeback in the Mizzou 20-18 win in the Sugar Bowl played that year out-of-doors at Tulane Stadium. Mizzou beat Spurrier and his Gamecocks in the 2005 Independence Bowl in Shreveport, 38-31 and the Tigers beat South Carolina under Jim Carlen in the Hall of Fame Bowl game in 1979, 24-14. Playing in Columbia, SC, will be no walk in the park Saturday. Some 80,000 will be loud and proud for the 2:30 p.m. (C.S.T. kickoff) on CBS. South Carolina is in full stride, heading into this SEC showdown with a perfect 3-0 start. After a shaky 17-13 win over Vanderbilt to open conference play, …

Mizzou football coach Gary Pinkel defended Joe Paterno and called him a great man during his SEC media day availability. What do you think of his remarks?
Remarks that University of Missouri head football coach Gary Pinkel made defending the now disgraced Penn State football coach Joe Paterno have at least one Missouri lawmaker at arms. Pinkel, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, called Paterno a "great man." That comment came just days after an investigative report concluded that top Penn State officials, including Paterno, had for more than a decade known of child sexual abuse allegations made against Jerry Sandusky and said nothing. According to the Post-Dispatch, Pinkel called Paterno a great friend and said the "greatness of this man" should not be erased. From the report: “You know, it's such a tragedy,” he began. “Joe Paterno was a friend I got to know professionally. You can'…

Do you think Mizzou and SLU will win their first NCAA men's basketball tournament game?
If you're reading this post, you've undoubtedly already filled out a bracket for the NCAA men's basketball tournament, which officially kicked off Tuesday. Instead of filling out that second, third, fourth... ninth bracket, why not try your hand at another fun game? For the first time since the 1999-2000 season, both Mizzou and Saint Louis University are playing in college basketball's most prolific postseason tournament. Both squads open their tournament schedules on Friday: Here at Patch, we're obviously pulling for the hometown teams? What about you? Leave us your prediction—outcome and score, and why you're predicting the way you are—and see how you stack up against other local future-readers throughout the St. Louis-area. To leave…

This rugged two-way performer at MICDS is the tonic the Tigers really need right now.
Gary Pinkel, Mizzou football coach, are you listening? Next fall, without fail, you need to play new freshman Michael Scherer and probably both ways. I'd be happy to repeat that. Mizzou hasn’t had two-way starters since the 1960s when Andy Russell of Ladue played fullback and linebacker and Texan Johnny Roland started sometimes at runningback and safety. It can be done. Football is no more physical or demanding today than back in the Dan Devine era, in which, by the way the Tigers were never losing to Kansas State. Saturday’s woeful performance in the other Manhattan only proved the Tigers need to upgrade their talent. Tiny 185 pound backs ran Mizzou’s defense silly. Scherer, who will arrive at Mizzou filled out at least 6-foot-3, 238 …
