Chesterfield native and Parkway Central graduate Max Scherzer pitched five innings Saturday to get the win Saturday for the Detroit Tigers against the New York Yankees. Scherzer struck out seven but did allow four runs on five hits on his way to his first win in 2013. Former St. Louis Cardinal Tim McCarver, entering his final season as FOX Sports' lead analyst for Major League Baseball coverage, told The Detroit Free Press that Scherzer could win the Cy Young Award this season. The Parkway Central grad pitched and lost Saturday just days after suffering a more important loss.
In the world of sports, the cliche of soldiering on despite "adversity" is often thrown around at the drop of a hat. For the past few days, a Parkway Central family mourning the loss of a son has been forced to do just that in the face of real grief. Alex Scherzer, 24, died Thursday. Media reports have not identified an official cause. His brother, Max, took two days off to attend to "personal matters" and then went back to work Saturday--on the mound for the Detroit Tigers against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
