Town and Country Log Cabin Preservation, Home Demolition Underway

Demolition is underway on a home along Conway Road where a log cabin sits inside. See photos, plus a video detailing the preservation and history of the cabin.

As previously reported by Patch, Alderman Skip Mange, with the help of others, worked to raise the $12,000 needed for the removal of a log cabin found inside a Town and Country home scheduled for demolition.     (For instant news updates follow Patch on Facebook and Twitter.)   The private funding was needed to disassemble the cabin at 13348 Conway Road reportedly build in 1854. The money was needed to remove the logs, catalogue them and store them at the city's Drace Park.   Demolition of the home encompassing the cabin is underway. Manchester Historic Society Sets Goals For Upcoming Year

For many years, there have been plans to create a historic commercial district in downtown Manchester. Alderman in Historic Review Commission says it's time to get the ball rolling.

But more than 100 years ago, that stretch of Manchester was also a busy place. “The joke is that it used to take a day in horse to go from Manchester to St. Louis,” Ward 3 Alderman John Diehl said. “Today, it still takes a day.” Manchester Road, historically known as Route 66, was the primary path for those passing through Missouri from the east, some seeking fortune in the Wild West’s gold rush. That stretch of Manchester Rd. is the worst bottleneck on over 12 miles of this heavily traveled thoroughfare. Historic ? Hardly...what the heck ever happened there to make it historic. Old ? Yes.... but that doesn't equate with "historic". Old buildings/storefronts right on top of the road with no shoulders or places to pull over. Most drivers curse having to go thu that stretch and it backs …   more ›

Do It In A Day

History is Alive on St. Charles Main Street

Step back in time and visit historic St. Charles, the location of Missouri’s first capital.

St. Charles is very proud of its past and has preserved a chunk of old Main Street just as it was when Daniel Boone might have dropped in for a visit. Historic St. Charles is great day trip whether you're wanting a history field trip for the kids, a shopping trip with the girls, or a romantic date with your special someone. First Capitol Building: St. Charles is home to Missouri’s first capitol building, a plain brick and timber building on Main Street where the House and Senate met while Jefferson City was being constructed. For several years the state government ran in a few rooms on the second floor over a general store and a carpenter’s shop. The fully restored building is now run by the state park system. Tours are $4 for adults, $2.…
