Parkway is buying 30 news buses as it transitions its fleet to become more invironmentally friendly by using compressed natural gas fuel.
A big yellow school bus is a familiar site, but now Parkway School District buses are going green. (For instant news updates follow Patch on Facebook and Twitter.) District officials tell Patch, the district is taking steps to transition its fleet of 150 buses to become more environmentally friendly. Parkway Spokesperson Cathy Kelly tells Patch, the buses will use a cleaner, healthier compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel. CNG costs less than diesel fuel, so Kelley said Parkway will save an estimated $100,000 per year in fuel costs as a result. The fuel will also leave a smaller footprint on the environment, according to Kelly. "It will reduce the amount of emissions emitted into the environment," she said. "The St. Louis area has bad …

The Parkway Coalition for Community Health is competing for a $500,000 grant to prevent drug abuse and suicide among its students. Police want the grant used to reinstate the DARE program.
The Parkway School District is one of twenty non-profit entities vying for a $500,000 grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health. If successful, the grant would be spread out over five years and fund a community outreach program to battle drug and tobacco use as well as prevent suicide among its students. The Missouri Foundation for Health will announce grant recipients in 2013. The privately funded foundation has awarded over $450 million in health related grants since 2000. Fred Crawford, Chief of Security at Parkway, said the coalition is trying to bring together community groups from police to religious leaders that could influence young people in regard to drug or tobacco use. “It involves a lot of different people,” he said. “They…

Town and Country residents took their opposition and an online petition to St. Louis County in an effort to prevent grant funding for the Longview Farm parking expansion project.
Despite efforts by a few Town and Country residents Monday to prevent the Municipal Park Grant Commission of St Louis County from approving funding for an engineering study grant for the Longview Farm Park parking project, the commission unanimously approved the grant. The meeting was attended by a couple of Town and Country residents, along with Town and Country aldermen Lynn Wright, Steve Fons and Al Gerber. Town and Country City Administrator and Police Chief John Copeland also attended the grant commission meeting. In February, the Town and Country Board of Aldermen voted to move forward with …
