MERS/Goodwill stores are offering a year of free movie tickets at Wehrenberg Theaters for tax-deductible donations of cars, boats, vans, and recreational vehicles—running or not.
It’s a win-win. Donate your car to MERS/Goodwill stores in December, and on top of your tax deduction, get a year of free movies at Wehrenberg Theaters. MERS/Goodwill partnered with the theater chain this month to entice residents to donate cars, trailers, jet skis, recreational vehicles, boats—as Roni Vetter, director of the car donation program, put it, “anything with a title or wheels.” Donors get one year’s worth of weekday movie passes at Wehrenberg Theaters in the St. Louis metro area, Springfield, Columbia and Jefferson City to use in 2012. Vehicle donations are getting major bang for their buck this year, something Vetter attributes to the economy. As household budgets shrink, families hold onto their cars longer, leaving fewer for…

"Patch" caught up with the Salvation Army to learn more about its well-known red kettle Christmas charity. Plus, where you can donate.
The Salvation Army bell ringers are part of the holiday tradition for St. Louis area shoppers. Right after Thanksgiving each year, the bell ringers make their way to their posts outside of department stores, drugstores and supermarkets. They bundle up and brave the cold, warmly greeting passersby and collecting donations for the Salvation Army’s Tree of Lights Program, which is a 12-week fundraiser the charity organization runs each year to help finance its work. “Once a year, The Salvation Army has the opportunity to take center stage for our cause, which is an incredibly important one, especially for the St. Louis region where we provide much-needed services for hundreds of thousands of individuals each year,” said Danni Eikenhorst, a …

Town and Country's Public Art Commission is looking for local artists and donations from businesses and residents to bring more art to the city. Town and Country Councilwoman Lynn Wright told Town and Country-Patch that the commission is seeking donations from those who would like to help bring the first Town and County sculpture to the city through the art commission. Although this first sculpture will likely sit near the fire station at Mason and Clayton roads, Wright said she hopes more art will follow. "This isn't just that we want it for this location. We want art for different places," Wright said. "Just look at Chesterfield. It's amazing what they've done." In addition to donations, Wright said, the commission is looking for artists…

Eagle Bank is donating lifesaving thermal imagers to 12 area fire departments, including the West County EMS and Fire Protection District.
Eagle Bank and Trust Company is donating lifesaving thermal imagers to 12 St. Louis area fire departments, including the West County EMS and Fire Protection District in Manchester. The donations are part of the bank's celebration of its 100th anniversary, a bank representative said in a release. Thermal imagers can help save the lives of both firefighters and victims during fire rescues, especially when there is heavy smoke. Bank Spokeswoman Susan Evans tells Patch that Eagle Bank donated the thermal imagers to make the celebration more about the neighborhoods that the bank serves versus just being about the bank. Evans said bank representatives consulted with a few fire departments in their various communities and thermal imagers were …
