School Safety Status Quo is Unacceptable, Says Parkway and Other Districts

While the Cooperating School Districts leader says school security plans are not a "one size fits all" proposition, he is advocating for changes that may require new taxes.

(Sign up here for the FREE Patch Newsletter, including Breaking News Alerts.) One attendee at last week's Safe Schools Partnership meeting was Don Senti, former Parkway superintendent and executive director of the Cooperating School Districts (CSD). He said superintendents who are CSD members are opposed to arming school staffers to provide security for school children. The Parkway School District is a member of the CSD organization. (Read more on the CSD's stance on school safety in the PDF portion of this article.) "Providing security for our most precious resource should be in the capable hands of those professionals who are trained in the use of fire arms, and more importantly, who know when to use them," Senti said. Parkway School District's Interim Superintendent Don Senti's last school board meeting was Wednesday.

His time with Parkway School District may be almost over, but school board members and Parkway staff are hoping his legacy lives on. Don Senti, who has served for the last year as interim superintendent for the district, will officially step down this summer. The district's new superintendent, Keith Marty, begins the job July 1.  To honor Senti's contributions to the district, the school board and staff are encouraging donations to the Parkway Alumni Association. Specifically, they're asking contributions be made to the association's Al Burr Educators Make A Difference Fund. The fund rewards outstanding teachers in the district with cash stipends. At Wednesday's Parkway Board of Education meeting, board member Dee Mogerman announced the …

New Parkway Superintendent Focused on Relationships, Strategic Planning

Keith Marty said he hopes to get to know people throughout the district and begin implementing Project Parkway plans.

When Parkway School District was in the midst of a months-long superintendent search, parents, teachers and other community members said they wanted a leader that is focused on student achievement, has an inspiring vision and possesses strong communication skills. The district thinks it has found that leader in Keith Marty. Parkway School Board President Bruce Major said the district was seeking a “transformational leader” with a personal touch. “(Marty) excels in the one-on-one,” Major said, adding that he is also a strong mentor. Marty, who is currently the superintendent of Menomonee Falls School District in suburban Milwaukee, said he leads by focusing on relationships. “I’m really committed to working hard. I think work ethic is …
