Affton-Shrewsbury Patch editor Lindsay Toler will be working as a "celebrity waiter" at Canyon Cafe for the annual fundraiser.
When I volunteer at the St. Louis Crisis Nursery, I'm always surprised by how much the children seem to need me. Here I am, a total stranger, but they still push past each other for the chance to be held, rocked, sung to, cuddled until they fall asleep. Volunteering for the Nursery is easy, in a way. It's like babysitting, but the social workers do the actual hard work (like disciplining, making dinner, etc.) All I have to do is play, hug and smile at little ones who seem desperate for positive attention. I'm telling you this because you have a fun opportunity to help me help the Nursery this month! I'll be working as a "celebrity waitress" for the Nursery's Celebrity Waitresses' & Waiters' Night, an annual fundraiser. Don't worry, I won'…

Shoppers are ready for August's once-a-year back to school tax-free holiday, but Manchester's Goodwill offers tax-free shopping year round.
Goodwill would like to remind the parents of school children that shopping at its thrift stores, such as the one in Manchester, is always tax-free—no holiday required. Goodwill is a nonprofit organization that sells donated goods in order to raise money for its job training and rehabilitation programs. “We receive thousands of new items in our stores daily,” said MERS-Goodwill District Manager Latrice Clayborne. “All tax-free.” Clayborne said that shoppers can find many bargains at Goodwill, including new items, designer label clothes and backpacks. The stores often receive surplus inventory from businesses--items that were never used and still have tags. “Children’s clothing is $2 a piece, which really helps parents out,” she said. Most …

Some of the proceeds of the department's annual golf tournament with Town & Country Police went to to Mike Vernon, a Florissant officer recently paralyzed while shot on duty.
Every year, members of the Town and Country Police Department team with their counterparts in Creve Coeur to hold a charity golf tournament to benefit causes around the St. Louis area. The tallies are still coming in from this year's event, held May 25 at Annbriar Golf Course in Waterloo, IL, but the approximately $35,000 in proceeds are already flowing. Matt Crosby, a former Rock Hill Police Officer who was paralyzed after being shot during a domestic assault call in 2010, received $500. Not long after the tournament was held, another local officer found himself in need. On May 28, Florissant Police officer Mike Vernon was shot in the line of duty and while the prognosis is not final, Vernon faces the possibility of paralysis. …

A charity drive to help the victims of the Joplin tornado is taking place Thursday until 2 p.m. at the Dierbergs at Manchester and Baxter roads in Manchester.
The St. Lou Crew for Joplin, a charity drive to help the victims of the Joplin tornado, is taking place Thursday until 2 p.m. at the Dierbergs at Manchester and Baxter roads in Manchester. Craig Wicker, organizer of the event, said residents have been giving generously since 7 a.m. and hopes the donations will continue well past 2 p.m. Wicker said residents can donate anything from dog food to clothes to diapers or non-perishable food goods. Wicker, an Anheuser Busch employee, said a couple weeks ago he was sitting watching T.V. and looking at the Joplin devastation. He said he decided to get on Facebook and post the question, "Who wants to go to Joplin?" "From there it just blew up," Wicker said. "We have gotten boxes with shoes, clothing…

Letter carriers across the country, including Town and Country and Manchester, spent Saturday collecting food to fight hunger across the country. Patch spent the day on the route of one carrier.
For the past 18 years, Rhonda Malin, a mail carrier for the Town and Country branch of the U.S. Postal Office, has stood under the same white fluorescent light sorting through hundreds of mail. Six days a week, Malin gets to her office at 7:45 a.m., organizes her deliveries for the 462 addresses in her route, and spends four to five hours on the street. Work can be repetitive. Saturday, however, the calendar tucked in her office had a letter “F” marking the date, reminding her of the 19th annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive, sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers. The food drive is one of the largest in the nation, said Kari Bowling, also a mail carrier, who organizes the drive at the Town and Country Post Office. All …
