Shot At Football Playoffs On The Line As Parkway South Takes On Top-Ranked CBC

Patriots need a win and some help to possibly make the playoffs, while a win for CBC would clinch the district championship.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS – PREP FOOTBALL GAME PREVIEW Parkway South Patriots (5-4)  vs.  CBC Cadets (9-0) Friday, October 28, 2011 – 7 p.m. – CBC High School TOWN & COUNTRY – With the final week of the high school football regular season set to unfold, one of the most anticipated matchups of the weekend features 5-4 Parkway South taking on undefeated and No. 1-ranked CBC in a game both teams need to win to make the Missouri Class 6 state playoffs. 9-0 CBC is in the driver’s seat among the four District 3 teams, having already beaten Marquette two weeks ago and Lafayette last week. The Cadets could even make the playoffs with a loss, so long as they didn’t get blown out by the Patriots, but it’s almost certain CBC’s plan is to play to win on …

CBC, Parkway South Poised For Championship Drive

CBC is the defending Class 4 state baseball champion, while Parkway South hopes to grab the 2011 crown.

CBC begins the road to repeat as Missouri state champions when the Cadets open up district play on Monday. Meanwhile, Parkway South has similar title aspirations. The Cadets consider this a brand new team and season, and want to win a new championship instead of repeating. “The first thing we talked about this season is last season is over,” CBC head coach Mason Horne said. “We didn’t want to add a lot unnecessary pressure and this is a new team with the mindset of winning their own championship instead of defending one.” CBC is the No. 1 seed in Class 4 District 7, meaning it will only need to win two games to advance to sectionals. The Cadets will count on their two aces, seniors David Schmidt and Brennan Devers, to lead the pitching …

Notebook: Postseason Awards Put Stamp on Hoops Season

Here is a rundown of area basketball players who earned postseason honors after this season.

It was a disappointing season for the Parkway West boys basketball team, but that did not slow down Larry Toomey. The 6-foot-6 senior forward was named the Suburban South Player of the Year earlier this month. Toomey shares this honor with University City junior guard Trevon Williams. Parkway West was 21-7 one year ago, but ended this season at 12-14 despite winning six of its final 10 games. The Longhorns and first-year head coach John Wright not only lose Toomey, but they will see six seniors graduate. Toomey’s next stop is West Point, as he will play for Army in the Patriot League this fall. Toomey became the seventh player in Longhorns history to reach 1,000 career points this season, and he led Parkway West with averages of 17.1 …

CBC Hockey Falls Short in Title Game

Francis Howell Central wins the Challenge Cup Championship game by defeating CBC, 7-3, at the Scottrade Center.

For the second consecutive season, the top-seeded CBC hockey team lost in the Challenge Cup championship game. After their hearbreaking 5-4 loss to De Smet in the Challenge Cup finals last season, the Cadets bounced back with another dominant season, only to fall 7-3 to Francis Howell Central at the Scottrade Center on Tuesday night. “It’s been awhile since we had been down and been in that situation,” CBC head coach John Jost said. “The effort was there, it just seemed like every time they got a break the other way it was in our net.” It was a night of firsts, meanwhile, for the Francis Howell Central hockey team on Tuesday. For starters, the Spartans were the first team from St. Charles County to reach the Mid-States Club Hockey …

Notebook: Postseason Unkind to Area Teams

The postseason represents a very sudden ending to the season, as many area teams recently experienced.

As exhilarating as postseason basketball can be, it is also represents a very sudden ending to the season, as many Town & Country and Manchester-area teams and players experienced by the end of last week. The Parkway South boys basketball team had its season conclude last Friday night in a frustrating 30-28 loss to Marquette. It will likely be the lowest scoring boys basketball district championship played in Missouri this season as neither team could string together an offensive run. Coach Mitch Stevens’ Patriots end with a 21-6 mark and failed to advance out of the Class 5 District 4 title game at Lafayette High School despite being the top seed. Parkway South was aiming for its fourth district championship in five seasons, but shot 23.5…

Challenge Cup: CBC Hockey Enjoying Lengthy Layoff

CBC is gearing up to play in the Challenge Cup semifinals against Webster Groves.

The CBC Cadets are playing in top form at the perfect time. It remains to be seen how 12 days off will impact the team's quest for a championship. CBC had nine different goal scorers on its way to an impressive 10-0 victory over the Eureka Wildcats last Saturday night (Feb. 12), propelling the Cadets to the semifinals of the Challenge Cup. Now, CBC is gearing up to begin play in the Challenge Cup semifinals. The Cadets will meet Webster Groves, who defeated Oakville, on Thursday at 8:45 p.m. in Game 1 of the semifinals at Hardee’s IcePlex. Game 2 will be Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. The Statesmen, a No. 12-seed, are a veteran team and have already proven they can knock off high seeds in the Challenge Cup tournament. “I told our team that was our best…

Challenge Cup Preview: CBC Aiming for Title

The CBC hockey club is anchored by a core of seniors who want to avenge last year’s title game loss.

The CBC Cadets will begin their quest to head back to the Challenge Cup Final by playing against a division opponent. Top-ranked CBC will take on Metro Division-rival Vianney on Thursday night in the first round of the Challenge Cup tournament at Kennedy Recreation Center in South County. The Cadets beat the Golden Griffins all three times in the regular season and once in the preseason. Game 2 of this first-round matchup and the mini-game (if necessary) will be Saturday at Affton Ice Rink. “We know a lot about each other and they are one of the toughest 16th seeds you can face,” CBC coach John Jost said. “You really have to take it one game at a time in the playoffs or your season will be over pretty quick.” The first round the Challenge …

CBC Hockey Looking to Create New Dynasty

The CBC Cadets have won the Mid-States championship in seven of the past 10 seasons. They look poised to start a new streak this season.

The best of the Missouri Mid-States Club Hockey Association over the past decade can be described in three letters. C-B-C. The CBC Cadets were crowned Mid-States champions in seven of the past 10 seasons with two “three-peats” (2001-2003, 2007-2009) during that span. They are looking to start a new streak this season. "Everyone has a chip on their shoulder from last year, especially the guys that played and we want to show that we still know how to win and how to be champions," CBC senior captain Brennan Devers said. CBC is putting together another dominant regular season. They are 10-0 in the Metro Division and 17-1 in the league with the Cadet's only loss against Marquette back on Nov. 12. The Cadets resume play on Jan. 22 against …
