Smoothie King Adding 25 Locations in St. Louis Area

Are you a fan of the franchise's West County locations? The company has announced plans to expand over the next five years.

UPDATED: 4:30 p.m., April 29- There’s a smoothie war brewing in St. Louis and it will likely mean good things for West County residents who are fans of the fruit-based beverages. (For instant news updates follow Patch on Facebook and Twitter.) Smoothie King announced last week that it is seeking to expand its footprint in St. Louis and open 25 additional locations over the next five years. The national chain already has locations in Chesterfield, Manchester, Creve Coeur and Kirkwood. “We are confident that our brand has great potential for further development in St. Louis and look forward to building a stronger presence in the area,” said Smoothie King CEO Wan Kim in a press release. Man Dead, Reportedly Shot By Mother In Ballwin Overnight

A man has died after being shot by his mother during an overnight incident in Ballwin.

Updated at 10 a.m. An 81-year-old woman shot and killed her 41-year-old son early this morning at the mother's residence in the 700 block of Clayworth Drive, Ballwin police said in a statement. The shooting occurred around 1 a.m. today, police said. In the statement Ballwin police said they got the call from Johanna Walker, 81, who was wounded in her right hand. Her son, Brian Walker, was found with gunshot wounds in his upper torso, police said. Both were taken to Mercy Hospital, where Brian Walker was pronounced dead shortly before 2 p.m. His mother was admitted; police said her injuries were not life threatening. Johanna Walker told police her son had attacked and injured her with a large knife. When he came at her a second time, police…

St. Louis Clergy React to Pope's Resignation

As news of Pope Benedict XVI's resignation spreads, former parish priest Cardinal Timothy Dolan of Ballwin is one name being discussed as the next possible pope.

The surprise announcement this morning that Pope Benedict XVI would resign the papacy at the end of the month immediately brought to mind the name of perhaps the most powerful Catholic in the United States as a possible successor. Ballwin native and archbishop of the Roman Catholic archdiocese of New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, was immediately mentioned as a possible successor when the College of Cardinals meets in March to choose the next pope. Local clergy shared their thoughts on Monday's news within the Catholic Church with Patch. Woman Assaulted Officer During DWI Arrest, Police Say

A West St. Louis County woman had her 6-year-old daughter in her car when she was arrested for drunk driving and assaulted a police officer, according to police.

Rachel Wilcox, 27, of unincorporated West. St. Louis County was charged Thursday with driving while intoxicated. (Sign up here for the FREE Patch Newsletter, including Breaking News Alerts.) According to Officer Melissa Doss with the St. Peters Police Department, the DWI charge and others stem from a Jan. 6 incident where Wilcox was arrested, suspected of DWI. Doss said the woman's 6-year-old daughter was in the car at the time. Road Construction, Federal Funding Possible For Manchester's Henry Avenue

The cities of Manchester and Ballwin could apply for federal funding for improvements to Henry Avenue.

The cities of Manchester and Ballwin may soon work together on a Henry Avenue road construction project. (Follow Patch on Facebook for updates- check out our page and "Like" it here.) Monday, Manchester aldermen discussed applying for a grant, in conjunction with the City of Ballwin, for improvements to Henry Avenue. The approximate 11,300 feet of the road, which is a little over 2 miles, runs between Clayton and Manchester roads. The street runs through both Manchester and Ballwin. However, Manchester City Engineer Ed Blattner said the majority of the road is located in Ballwin with an approximate 62/38 percent split. The two cities are considering applying for an East/West Gateway Grant in 2013 that would offer federal funds for …

Kehrs Mill Road Closing to One Lane Over Nights Next Week

Night paving construction will close parts of Kehrs Mill from Clayton to Holloway during nights next week.

Kehrs Mill Road will be closed down to one lane from Clayton Road to Holloway Road during evenings next week. (Sign up here for the FREE Patch Newsletter, including Breaking News Alerts.) The paving work is scheduled for Oct. 15-17 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night. Inclement weather could postpone the work, but updates will be posted to theCity of Ballwin website as well as electronic message boards near the construction. Ballwin City Administrator Bob Kuntz said the move to night work over three nights is comparable to what could be done during day hours over two to three weeks. The Manchester police chief said there is no need to shop around for better contracts because the price is fair and the two departments have an extensive history together.

A correction to your story above. Creve Coeur no longer dispatches its own units. They are apart of the West Central Dispatch, which includes Town & Country, Creve Coeur, and Frontenac. Manchester's options for dispatching include staying with Ballwin, going to West Central, or going to St. Louis County. Police Dispatch Price Shopping Pushed by Manchester Alderman

Manchester will likely continue having police calls dispatched through the Ballwin Police Department, but Alderman Marilyn Ottenad wants the Manchester police chief to compare quotes from other nearby agencies too.

The Manchester Board of Aldermen recently heard from Manchester Police Chief Tim Walsh on a proposed plan to renew the city's contract with the Ballwin Police Department for dispatching services. UPDATE: Man Charged, Man Wanted in Connection to Murder of Parkway South Grad

A 20-year-old is now charged in connection to the shooting death of a Ballwin man and Parkway graduate who was ambushed, shot and killed while delivering pizza this weekend.

St. Louis County police tell Patch Chester Romelle Woods, 20, is charged with second-degree murder and robbery in the shooting death of Daniil Maksimenko, 22, of Ballwin.  Maksimenko, who graduated from Parkway South High School in 2008, was confronted and shot multiple times, including in the head, while out on a pizza delivery call in Hillsdale around 12:45 a.m. Saturday.  (Read Previous Story: Parkway South Graduate Murdered Delivering Pizza) Woods, of the 2100 block of Rosebud Avenue in St. Louis County, is being held on $250,000 bail at the St. Louis County jail, according to police.
