Support Backstoppers With a Holiday Ornament

Police and fire ornaments are available for purchase.

If you are looking to help a good cause you can help area law enforcement families make it through the holiday season. (For instant news updates follow Patch on Facebook and Twitter.) Ornaments for Officers, a local fundraiser is selling new and gently used ornaments, and the proceeds go soley to Backstoppers, which helps the families of police and firefighters who are killed or injured in the line of duty. The goal is to raise $60,000, according to the charity's local website. Ornaments donated to Ornaments for Officers will be displayed at a number of participating retailers, more than 300, until Christmas. The ornaments cost $9 each and come with a list of money-saving coupons.   Backstoppers will use the proceeds to help support the …

Town and Country Police Raise Money For Charities & Officers In Need

Some of the proceeds of the department's annual golf tournament with Town & Country Police went to to Mike Vernon, a Florissant officer recently paralyzed while shot on duty.

Every year, members of the Town and Country Police Department team with their counterparts in Creve Coeur to hold a charity golf tournament to benefit causes around the St. Louis area.  The tallies are still coming in from this year's event, held May 25 at Annbriar Golf Course in Waterloo, IL, but the approximately $35,000 in proceeds are already flowing. Matt Crosby, a former Rock Hill Police Officer who was paralyzed after being shot during a domestic assault call in 2010, received $500. Not long after the tournament was held, another local officer found himself in need. On May 28, Florissant Police officer Mike Vernon was shot in the line of duty and while the prognosis is not final, Vernon faces the possibility of paralysis. …

Man Arrested in Connection with Burglaries in Town and Country

The following information was provided by the Town and Country Police department. An arrest does not indicate conviction.

Town and Country police report the arrest of 22-year-old Robert Mason-Ellman on charges related to burglary and stealing in the city. Police say in the afternoon hours of Dec. 6, Mason-Ellman burglarized a home in the 900 block of Greenwich Green. A resident notified the police department of suspicious activity that same afternoon within a block of where the burglary occurred, according to the report. That information led to the arrest of Mason-Ellman on Dec. 8. The detectives submitted the case to the St. Louis County prosecutor and warrants for burglary and stealing were issued. Mason-Ellman is in county jail on a $50,000 bond. Detectives are also investigating his involvement in other residential burglaries committed in the area after …

Police Score a Hole-in-One for Charity

Town and Country and Creve Coeur police departments organize annual Greens for Green charity golf tournament to benefit families of fallen officers.

One day a year, Creve Coeur police officer Neal Kohrs leaves his police car, weapons and badge and exchanges them for golf clubs, a baseball cap and a golf car. His outfit may change, but the goal remains the same: Help those in need. It's a scene and sentiment shared by Town and Country and Creve Coeur police. On Monday, both departments sponsored and played in the annual Greens for Green charity golf tournament. Close to 200 people attended the event at the Annbriar Golf Course in Waterloo, IL. West County Firefighters Battle for a Good Cause

Two firefighters from the West County EMS and Fire Protection District join police and firefighters from around the area in the annual Guns 'N Hoses boxing event for Backstoppers.

The night before Thanksgiving is usually reserved for brining the turkey, baking pies or the arrival of relatives. For Greg Bewig and Brian Hepperman, both firefighters with the West County EMS and Fire Protection District, it's about boxing. The two are stationed at Firehouse 3 in Town and Country, but will spend their Thanksgiving Eve in the ring at the Scottrade Center in downtown St. Louis raising money for Backstoppers in the annual Budweiser Guns 'N Hoses event. Backstoppers, founded in 1959, provides a safety net for the spouse and children of law enforcement officers, firefighters, paramedics and EMTs who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
