Visitation Academy Teacher Receives Leadership in Education Award

Visitation Academy teacher Nancy Moore was surprised with an award this week for her dedication to students.

Thanksgiving will have special meaning for Nancy Moore, a fifth-sixth grade math teacher at Visitation Academy in Town and Country. Moore, a resident of Crystal Lake Park was presented a Peabody Logos Leader in Education award for the 2011-2012 school year. Moore was shocked when she was given a $1,000 stipend tied to the award. As a fifth and sixth grade mathematics teacher Moore combines a fair, honest and open classroom to inspire her students. She mixes humor and positive thinking to get the job done. She is moderator for the Bellarmine Speech League, helping young girls to become practiced public speakers which she credits to helping build students’ self confidence. Students Named National Achievement Semifinalists

The students from Parkway North and Parkway Central are eligible to compete for college scholarship dollars.

The Parkway School District announced this week that a pair of Creve Coeur area high school students have been named National Merit Scholarship Achievement scholarship semifinalists. Parkway Central's Ahmed Eltahir, and Parkway North's Paa Imbeah are among a pool of approximately 16,000 students nationwide to have reached this stage, thanks to performance on standardized testing. The field will be winnowed down to 15,000 students nationwide who have demonstrated strong academic performance throughout high school and will have been recommended and endorsed by their principal. Special School District Students Receive Scholarships and Awards

The Special School District of St. Louis County recognized and awarded 39 students for outstanding achievements, including many from Town and Country and Manchester.

The Special School District of St. Louis County recognized and awarded 39 students for outstanding achievements, including many from Town and Country and Manchester. The students received scholarships and awards, according to district officials. The students were recogniized by the Special Education Foundation along with the Special School District (SSD) at the annual Commitment to Kids Banquet on April 28, SSD said. Students were honored for their achievements in academics, vocational training, community service, arts, independent living skills and communication skills, SSD officials said in a news release. Whiz Kid: Atajio Ivy Works Hard to Reach His Goals

Eleven-year-old Atajio Ivy says he works hard to reach his goals.

Atajio Ivy Whiz Kid Age: 11 Whiz Kids School: Pierremont Elementary  Whiz Kids Accomplishments: Fifth-grader Atajio Ivy recently received the Parkway School District's Spirit of Excellence Award. The award is given to African-American students who have achieved outstanding accomplishments, including maintaining a high GPA and good citizenship. Atajio is president of the Student Leadership Council. His mother tells Patch that Atajio maintained straight A's all year long. "He was very excited about being honored and he really wanted to earn the award. He started praying for it. It was his goal," she said. Parkway West Senior Receives Distinction Award

Hope Bretscher of Parkway West High School won a $500 scholarship for her involvement in civic organizations and social justice discussions

The Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri recognized the accomplishments of 20 local girls and women last week, at the fourth annual Girls and Women of Distinction award ceremony. Each award recipient was nominated for somehow demonstrating leadership in her community, embodying the Girl Scout values of courage, confidence and character. The girls, ranging from seventh to 12th grade, each received a $500 college scholarship. The Women of Distinction, recognized for leadership in everything from law enforcement and civil rights, to sustainability and biochemistry, each received a pearl necklace with their awards. Local Students Receive UMSL Science Award

Meet three local students who recently received the UMSL Distinguished Achievement Award for Excellence in Science.

Three local students recently received the UMSL Distinguished Achievement Award for Excellence in Science. In a press release, university officials said 36 students were honored by the University of Missouri–St. Louis’ College of Arts and Sciences.
