Free Manchester Clinic Combats Health Care Barriers

A free clinic in Manchester is helping bring medical treatment to residents without insurance.

A free health clinic in Manchester is making an impact on the lives of West County residents without insurance.

Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) West County Clinic, located at 14395 Manchester Rd. at Henry Avenue, opened its doors two months ago and operates 2-4 p.m. Sundays, according to the Suburban Journals of Greater St. Louis.

The clinic is focused on providing free non-emergency primary care for uninsured, low-income residents, aged 18-64, who live or work in Des Peres, Manchester, Town and Country, Ellisville, Ballwin, Chesterfield, Wildwood or Winchester, the Suburban Journals reports.

According to the Journals, the Manchester clinic is part of a public health project of the , which is located at Manchester and Weidman roads. Many of the clinic volunteers attend the mosque which reportedly helps pay rent for the clinic offices, the Journals reports.

The West County facility is the fourth VIM clinic in Missouri and follows the . Dr. Maimuna Baig, M.D., spearheaded the effort to open both clinics, but she credits health care volunteers with making treatment a reality.

“It’s impossible to do this as one person,” . “Each and every person is very important. From the volunteers who greet people when they come in, to the nurses who take their histories to the pharmacy students who call the companies to get medication—if one link is missing, the clinic can not function.”

Volunteers in Medicine is a national nonprofit comprised of 250,000 retired physicians, 350,000 nurses and 40,000 dentists, with more than 80 clinics nationwide.
