Barrister’s used to be a frequent watering hole for us when we lived in Clayton, so coming back was a bit like coming home.  This upscale, yet unpretentious and welcoming bar and grill definitely offers no lack of entertainment for the sports enthusiast, but if you’re in not that camp (like me!) no worries, Barristers is a laid back joint with great food, fun people to talk with and you certainly do not need to be cheering at one of the TVs to feel like you belong.

Herb’s Take

First Bite Words: Holy cow!

Every time I have visited Barrister’s in the past I often wavered between the Smoked Tomato Chipotle Hummus with pita and the Ultimate Veggie Burger.  Truthfully, I have always liked their veg burger, and even though Match does a good job at spicing up their product; for my taste, I require more flavor. So, in the past when I have ordered this, it’s been good, not great.

This my friends, has changed.  I don’t know if it’s Match’s doing or the good people in the back of the house, but this is a damn good burger.  The flavor of the patty was a bit smoky and spicy with layers of flavor.  The consistency was that no less than of a real beef burger and there was no skimping on size, either.  Just look at that thing!  (No, No, not yet, stay with me.)  And, to boot, they lather the patty with the aforementioned hummus, an avocado slice (winner!), a cucumber slice (genius) and sprouts, which I have never been a fan of, but know they have crazy great heath benefits, so I held tight with them. I just dare you carnivores to tell me you wouldn’t like this.  Shoot, I might just buy it for you.

Om’s Take

First Bite Words: Whoa!

The Barrister’s Ultimate Veggie Burger.  As reported by an omnivorous barrister.

This is the best one yet.  I started with the cucumber salad.  I finish my sides first.  So did Einstein.  They say it’s a sign of genius.

The salad was really, really good.  Great flavor.  Decent portion.  Added to the overall presentation of the plate.   The burger was excellent.  It’s got a MatchMeat base but it’s spiced-up in-house.  Great flavor to the patty.  Good texture to the patty.  Toppings?  Standard tomato  (a good one…).  Cucumber.  Doesn’t stop there, however.  Sprouts (which I’m not a huge fan of but they actually really enhance to overall texture of burger).  And the topping kicker…their home made hummus, which is also pretty spicy in its own right.

Overall, it was an excellent purchase.  Tasted great.  Looked pretty.  Good portion.   If I had to come up with a criticism, it would be the cucumber on the burger.  Cuke O.D.  But one can easily blame that on us for selecting the cucumber salad as our side instead of fries.

Overall = 9.
