As Missouri’s largest metropolitan area and longtime economic engine, the St. Louis area faces a variety of unique challenges, including a complex sales tax pooling system, an overabundance of entities taxing residents, and a plethora of municipal services that fail to function efficiently.
The goal of the Joint Interim Committee on St. Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area Governance and Taxation is to recommend reforms to the area’s taxation and governance systems that will better enable St. Louis City and County to provide quality, cost-effective services to their residents.
One of the Committee’s most important functions is to commission an independent study examining taxation and governance in St. Louis City and County. The Committee will use this information as a baseline for its investigation and recommendations.

As Chair of the Committee, I want this study to encompass the issues that matter most to the residents of the St. Louis area, so the Committee will hold a public hearing on August 28 at 12:30 pm in the St. Louis County Council's Chamber. Concerns brought forward at the hearing will help the Committee define the study's scope.
