Halloween Safety Tips
Haunted houses, colorful costumes, and jack-o-lanterns make a little Halloween fright fun for both kids and adults, but staying safe is the most important part of these festivities.
Following these safety tips from the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) can help make sure your children’s costumes are the scariest part of this Halloween.
- Younger children should never trick-or-treat without a parent or trusted adult. Older kids need to travel in groups to remain safe.
- Discuss the trick-or-treat route with your child, set a time to be home, and develop a plan for if your child gets separated from their group.
- Check all treats in a well-lit room to ensure that everything is properly packaged.
- Try makeup instead of a mask. Your child will look ghoulish without having his or her vision impaired.
- Costumes should be flame retardant and short enough to prevent tripping.
- If you are expecting trick-or-treaters, clear your yard, porch, and sidewalk of any obstacles that may cause them to fall.
