Capitol Report: June 21, 2013
This year, I will serve on two interim committees, which will allow me to examine some of the most pressing issues facing Missouri while the legislature is out of session.
Improving Government Responsiveness and Efficiency Interim Committee
As Chair of the Improving Government Responsiveness and Efficiency Interim Committee, I will expect accountability and transparency from executive departments. The Committee will investigate potential departmental misconduct, such as the Department of Social Services’ (DSS) mismanagement of $170,000 that was meant for early childhood programs but, instead, went to facilities that did not exist or where children were not actually in attendance.

Interim Joint Committee on St. Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area Governance and Taxation
The Interim Joint Committee on St. Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area Governance and Taxation will commission an independent study on the taxation system in St. Louis and submit recommendations for legislation by the end of the year. Since many issues regarding St. Louis’s taxation and governance systems have been brought up for discussion, it is the legislature’s duty to examine these matters and listen to constituents’ concerns.

I am also hopeful that I will serve on the House Interim Committee on Medicaid Transformation, which has been tasked with suggesting potential reforms to Missouri’s broken Medicaid system to increase the quality and efficiency of the program. My primary concern is that everyone with a Medicaid card should be able to feel comfortable in the knowledge that the card provides them with meaningful care.
