Visitation Academy Steamrolls Way Toward State Championship

For the second straight year, Visitation Academy ends Notre Dame's season in the Class 2 state playoffs.

It was a scene all too familiar on Friday when Visitation Academy and Notre Dame High School met in the Class 2 girl’s soccer semifinals at the Anheuser-Busch Center in Fenton.

For the second straight year, the Vivettes and Rebels met in the playoffs and Visitation (20-5) proved why it’s the defending state champions with an impressive 6-0 win over Notre Dame.

“The girls came out to play,” Visitation head coach Dick Westbrook said. “I told them beforehand that the last time three times we played Notre Dame, they have always scored first. So that means it’s either bad coaching on my part or you’re not mentally ready. But we were mentally ready today.”

Visitation jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 34:43 to play in the first half on a goal by Courtney Young with Sarah Price getting the assist. Young would score again for the Vivettes with 32:47 to play in the first half on an unassisted goal 15 yards out from the goal.

“She was on a little mission today I guess,” Westbrook said. “She’s been our go-to girl for four years and she’s never let us down. Just a great individual, and she’s going to be a big asset next season at SIU.”

The Vivettes increased their lead to 3-0 on an unassisted goal from about 20 yards out by Jade Klump with 13:38 to play in the first half.

Young would notch her hat trick for the day on a header from about five yards out with 5:21 to play in the half. Katherine Hopkins garnered the assist on Young’s goal.

“The score really doesn’t say enough about the game,” Young said. “Notre Dame played hard and every time we get on the field with them we know it’s going to be a battle. We worked hard on finishing all week long to prepare for this game and I think it definitely showed.”

Hopkins scored Visitation’s fifth goal of the game with 20:50 to play in the second half with Abigail Grimes getting the assist on Hopkins’ shot to the far post from about 20 yards out.

Grimes scored a goal of her own with a header inside the box to the far left post with 18:36 to play in the game as Price nabbed the assist to give Visitation a 6-0 lead.

The loss for Notre Dame (18-7-1) moves the Rebels into the third-place game on Saturday at 10 a.m. against Harrisonville.

“In order for us to have a chance we were going to have to play our A game,” Notre Dame head coach Jeff Robben said. “When you play a team like Viz that’s solid all the way through their lineup and as deep as they are, we had to come with our A game and unfortunately early on we just did not have it.”

Visitation will take on Notre Dame de Sion at 4 p.m.
