Parkway Central Falls in Two Overtimes at Chaminade Finale

John Burroughs hung on through two overtimes to beat Parkway Central, 76-70, on Wednesday at the Chaminade Holiday Tournament.

John Burroughs hung on through constant lead changes in the second half and overtime to defeat Parkway Central, 76-70, in double overtime on Wednesday at the Chaminade Holiday Tournament.

With the loss, Parkway West had to settle for sixth place in the tourney.

The Colts started the game with a depleted bench. Both starting guards were on the injured list. Junior Zach Carel is recovering from a concussion while junior Joe Esstman is suffering from a serious thigh injury.

That forced sophomore guard Antwon Hoard to move up from the junior varsity to the starting lineup. Hoard started cold in the first half, missing one shot and grabbing just a single rebound. But, in the second half, his play was a major factor in the Colts overcoming a 33-27 halftime deficit.

Hoard's crisp pass to a slashing Eriq Moore for a basket tied the game at 44 at the end of the third quarter. Hoard ended the game with 11 points, four assists and three rebounds.

"I had a chat with Antwon at halftime," said Colts coach Todd Pannett. "He is a better player than he showed in the first half. The varsity games are a lot faster than JV games. It took a little adjusting on his part."

Regulation ended in a 57-57 tie. Hoard had five points and Moore had four points in the first overtime that ended tied at 66. Moore, a junior guard, finished the game with 18 points.

Junior forward Zach Biggs finished with a team-high 25 points and nine rebounds. Biggs scored all of the Colts' four points in the second overtime.

Burroughs was led by senior guard Grant Wallace, who is an all-metro football standout at wide receiver. Wallace had a night similar to Chaminade's star player Bradley Beal, minus any dunks. He scored 35 points, grabbed nine rebounds, made two steals.

The problem for Parkway Central was it needed to stop either Wallace or Bombers sophomore guard Foye Oluokun. The Colts failed in that mission, as Oluokun scored 26 points and had four steals.

The loss dropped the Colts to 5-5 while Burroughs improved to 3-5.

NOTES: The Colts' top scorer, Biggs, missed Tuesday night's 61-34 win over Bishop DuBourg, as he was home with a case of stomach flu. He recovered enough on Wednesday to go to the Parkway Central gym for a workout and afterwards reported to coach Pannett that he thought he could play.

"He averages a double-double, so 25 points and 9 rebounds is pretty good for a kid on his death bed Tuesday," said Pannett.

The Colts lost three players to fouls during the overtimes.

Senior guard Elliot Rosen continues to play with a foot stress fracture. He played in all four quarters and both OT periods, sinking a free throw at the end of regulation to send the game to overtime. He finished with five points and six rebounds.
