High School Football: Colts Shut Out Vikings In Parkway Clash

The Colts remain undefeated heading into next weekend's matchup with University City.

In a matchup that carried plenty of upset potential for Parkway Central after last week's win over Webster Groves, the Colts continued a season-long theme focused on using the team's multi-faceted rushing attack and a stingy defense to go on the road and shut out Parkway North 23-0 Friday.

"We had a very emotional win last week and I just worried about our intensity and our fire and I challenged our kids and I feel like they lived up to the challenge," Central Head Coach Mark Goldenberg said.

After the the teams traded punts for most of the first quarter, a Parkway Central 82 yard drive exclusively on the ground except for a pass play from Zach Lazenby to Jake Bushman ended with a Lazenby touchdown with 1:38 left in the quarter for a 7-0 advantage.

The ensuing Parkway North drive was buoyed by a 30 yard kickoff return from Johnathan Little, but ended with a fumble at the Parkway Central 13 yard line. The Colts couldn't make points off the turnover because of a bad snap on a field goal attempt.

On the next Colts possession, a Zach Lazenby punt downed at the Parkway North led to a Central safety for a 9-0 lead.

After the kickoff, a 31-yard pass play set up a 15 yard touchdown run by Augie Brooks for a 16-0 halftime lead.

Brooks would finish the night with 155 yards on 25 carries

A Michael Slater 8 yard run in the third quarter wrapped up scoring for the night.

Parkway North Head Coach Bob Bunton praised his team's defense for not folding up, but said the offense needs to get on track.

"We've got to find our weapons. We've just gotta find a better mix on offense. We're just really out of sync."

"You've gotta score points to win but I thought defensively it was a pretty gritty effort. That's a great team," Bunton said of Parkway Central.

Next week, the Vikings (2-4) head on the road to Parkway West Friday, while Parkway Central plays at University City next Saturday.
