Experienced Parkway Central Colts Back For More In 2013

The Colts open the season at home against the Ladue Rams.

When the Parkway Central kicks off Friday night against Ladue, Mark Goldenberg will field one of the most experienced teams in the St. Louis area, with at least a half dozen returning starters on both sides of the ball.

The Colts feature Division I pledges in Lineman Jonathan Bonner (Notre Dame) and Linebacker Tres Knes (Miami, OH) on defense, and a version of Thunder-Thunder-Lightning on offense with a running attack featuring Michael Slater and Khalen Saunders and Augie Brooks.

Back for a second season at quarterback is Zack Lazenby, Parkway Central's do-everything athlete. Lazenby is a multi-sport talent and also a multi-positional threat as the team's placekicker.

"Zack is an unbelievable athlete. Baseball is good. He's an All American racquetball player, he competes at a high level in everything he does," Goldenberg said. "The only tough thing about Zack is he's so good at everything that everybody wants him to be doing it." Lazenby's goal is to play college baseball at a school within a three or four hour radius from St. Louis.

Despite all the returning talent in the starting lineup, Goldenberg and Lazenby gave special praise after Friday's jamboree to the second team players who have battled against the starters in practice and showed they can be counted on when the games start counting this weekend.

"We didn't really know how good they were before today...they stepped up, they did a phenomenal job so its good to have a little more focus, a little more trust in them," Lazenby said.

If the players have targeted their October 18 matchup with Kirkwood as a revenge game--the Pioneers defeated the Colts twice last season, including a season-ending loss in the state semifinals, Goldenberg's focus is only on his week one opponent.

"Last year is last year. We don't get to start at the final four. Kirkwood is not even on our radar at this point we're just thinking about Ladue," he said.
