CBC Loses Challenge Cup in Overtime to Rival SLUH

Saint Louis University High School wins the Challenge Cup 2-1 against CBC thanks to an overtime goal by SLUH's Stephen Lordo.

Saint Louis University High School's Stephen Lordo buried a rebound in the back of the net just more than 3 minutes into overtime and delivered the Junior Billikens their first-ever Mid-States Challenge Cup championship Monday night at Scottrade Center.

The goal also stopped CBC from making good on the Cadets' "13 in '13" campaign as a win would have captured CBC's 13th Challenge Cup victory in the year 2013.

The game was a rematch of last season's Challenge Cup matchup, which was won by CBC. That loss left bad memories lingering for SLUH's returning players. And Monday they were out for revenge.

"Last year left a sour taste in our mouth," said SLUH captain Chase Berger, who helped set up the winning overtime goal by throwing the puck at the net initially.

The Junior Billikens nearly won the game without the dramatics but a late goal with less than three minutes remaining the game by CBC's senior forward Christian Argyros knotted the game at 1-1 and sent the division rivals into overtime.

CBC did all it could to muster up some more offense, outshooting SLUH 28-16. But Junior Billiken goalie Joseph Warnecke, a freshman, was solid the entire game.
