CBC Confirms McCormack Out As Head Basketball Coach

The longtime Cadet basketball coach will remain on the school's faculty.

A spokesman for CBC High School Wednesday confirmed a report that leaked out late Tuesday night that longtime basketball coach Bob McCormack will no longer coach the Cadets after 17 seasons on the bench.

Rob Staggenborg told Patch that the formal decision not to renew McCormack's contract as coach came Wednesday morning and that the decision was made by Athletic Director Rocky Streb and Principal Br. David Poos. Parents were being notified Wednesday morning.

McCormack has not returned a message seeking comment.

Staggenborg said coaches were evaluated on an annual basis and that "nothing wrong" happened. McCormack will remain on the faculty of the school. Staggenborg also shot down speculation that the coaching change was related to the change in the President's office, where Michael Jordan has assumed an interim role following Michael England's resignation earlier this academic year.

McCormack's Cadets were a favorite heading into the season, with a strong club that is the envy of Division I college recruiters around the country. The team still finished 20-8 in 2012-2013, with a season-ending defeat to De Smet Jesuit in last week's district championship.

Upon hearing the news, CBC student athletes took to social media to talk about the move.

"Unfortunate to see coach go out like this... A great person and I wish him the best going forward," Beau Bommarito Tweeted.

"Everyone knows Coach McCormack wasnt my favorite, but I guess I can say I still respect him as a man and a basketball coach," Jalen Wadlington also added on Twitter.

Staggenborg said a search task force would be set up to find a new coach, and that there isn't a timeline. He also dismissed talk that already had some coaches being mentioned in connection with the position, including former Cadet Justin Tatum, the Soldan High School coach and father of Chaminade standout Jayson Tatum.
