Top-Ranked CBC Pounds Parkway South, Clinches District Title, Playoff Berth

Powered by 28-point third quarter, Cadets blow past Patriots for 47-0 win, and earn themselves a home playoff game, next week against Hazelwood Central.

TOWN AND COUNTRY – The top-ranked football team in both the citywide and statewide top 10 rankings looked every bit the part Friday night, as the No. 1 CBC Cadets blasted visiting Parkway South 47-0, in the final game of the regular season at CBC’s Ross Stadium.

“We had some spurts where we did look good,” CBC head coach Scott Pingel said. “We started off a little slow in the first half. We had some fumbled snaps that kind of put us in holes. But there’s always things we could clean up. But at the end of the day we’re pretty happy.”

Indeed they should be, as the Cadets (10-0) wrapped up a perfect regular season with the shutout win over the Patriots, and can now add Class 6 District 3 champions to their list of 2011 accomplishments, which includes a second straight undefeated Metro Catholic Conference championship.

“It’s been a good year for us no doubt,” Pingel said. “But hopefully, we’re not done yet.”

In the early going Friday, Parkway South caused CBC some trouble.

The Patriots couldn’t generate much on offense, but were giving an inspired effort on defense, and held the high-scoring Cadets to just 12 first half points.

“I thought our kids just played their hearts out,” South head coach Travis Blevins said. “These guys gave it everything they had against the number one team in the state, I couldn’t have asked for anything more. But CBC, you have to hand it to them, they are some kind of team.”

The Cadets really proved that point in thethird quarter, when they scored 28 unanswered points that busted wide open what had previously been a close ballgame.

Quarterback Dalton Demos, one of the top contenders for the St. Louis-area Player-of-the-Year award this year, threw three touchdown passes in that third quarter, and finished the game with four, as CBC cruised to an easy win in the second half.

“I didn’t really have to say much at halftime,” Pingel said. “These guys know what we expect of them, and they were a little embarrassed after that first half, and they wanted to come out and show something different. They did a nice job.”

For Parkway South, which could’ve nabbed a playoff spot for itself if it had been able to pull off the upset over No. 1 CBC, junior running back Cedric Bankhead was the one bright spot.

He carried the ball 15 times for 75 yards on the night, but it just wasn’t enough against what surely must’ve felt like a CBC juggernaut.

“CBC’s a tremendous team,” Blevins said. “Scott does a terrific job with them. Our kids fought like hell, and bottom line, I’m just so proud of them. It’s a tough night, but we’ll bounce back.”

Parkway South finished its year with a 5-5 record this year, and with players like Bankhead and defensive standout Kellen Ash returning next year, the Patriots seem to be building a solid foundation that could lead more winning times as soon as next year.

CBC, on the other hand, is a team built to win this year.

And the Cadets will take their shot at winning a state football championship, next Friday night, when they’ll host a first-round state playoff game against Hazelwood Central.

The matchup will mark the third year in a row that CBC and Hazelwood Central will meet in the state playoffs, but after Central’s three-year run to the state championship game, this will be the first time that CBC will be favored to win the matchup.

“They’re a little different team, but they’re still Hazelwood Central,” Pingel said. “We’ll have to be ready to play against those guys. And I look forward to getting our guys ready to play next week.”

Kickoff next Friday night will be at 7 p.m., at Ross Stadium, with the winner advancing to the state quarterfinals in two weeks against the winner of next Saturday’s Class 6 first round game between District 3 runner-up Lafayette and District 4 champion McCluer North.
