Suburban South Roundup: Parkway Central's Sivill a Cross Country Star

News and notes from the Suburban South Conference, including Parkway Central cross country runner Eric Sivill's record-setting season.

Cross Country: Sivill Stands Out For Parkway Central

Parkway Central cross country runner Eric Sivill continues his impressive senior season. He set a school record with a time of 15:52 at the Forest Park Festival.

Sivill then helped the Colts boys to a second-place team finish at the Parkway Central Invitational last Thursday. They finished with 99 points, which was just one better than Lindbergh. Parkway West won the boys meet with 88 points. The Longhorns were led by junior Chris Carter, who finished second. Junior Kevin Koboldt finished sixth.

Parkway West had finished second in the Stan Nelson Invitational on Sept. 10. The Longhorns had three top-10 runners. Carter was fourth, Koboldt was sixth and senior Steven Shearman placed ninth. Parkway West finished with 51 points, which was just six behind team champion Eureka. Kirkwood finished third as a team. Ben Neuhaus was the top Pioneers runner as he finished 12th.

Lafayette completely dominated the girls race at the Stan Nelson. The Lancers had seven of the top eight finishers. Seckman was second as a team. Junior Katelyn Evans was ninth and sophomore Mallory Goetz was 13th for the Jaguars.

The Parkway Central girls finished third in their invitational behind Lafayette and Holt. The Colts had a pair of top 10 finishers. Junior Taylore Burke was ninth while sophomore Elaine Reichert was 10th.

Webster Groves senior Brianna Hickey had an impressive run at Parkway Central, finishing fifth out of the 83 runners.

Field Hockey: U. City Leads Conference at 5-0

There was a surprise team at the top of the standings of the Suburban Conference in field hockey as play concluded last week (there are just two conferences for field hockey in the St. Louis area, the Suburban and MWAA).

University City is 5-0 in the Suburban Conference (5-3 overall). The Lions not only won their three games last week, but did so without allowing a goal. Senior Ellie McCray recorded the three shutouts (5-0 against Incarnate Word, 1-0 against Webster Groves and 6-0 over Brentwood) and has five shutouts for the season. Mandy York leads University City in scoring with eight goals and four assists.

Softball: Seckman Heating Up

The Seckman softball team won five games in a row after a slow start, before falling to 5-4 at Hillsboro last Friday. The Jaguars are tied with Rockwood Summit with 2-0 records in the Suburban South. Seckman improved to 8-4 overall with a 10-3 win over Webster Groves last Thursday. Madalyn Cooksey was three-for-four with a home run and four runs batted in. Madi Leonard went the distance on the mound, striking out 10.

Volleyball: Summit Impresses Early

Conference volleyball teams have played just one league match each. Rockwood Summit has had an impressive nonconference portion of its schedule. The Falcons improved to 9-2-1 with a 25-13, 25-19 win over Timberland last Thursday. Their only losses have come against Marquette and Ursuline.

Soccer: Statesmen Defense Stifling Opponents

Webster Groves is in first place in soccer with a 3-1 conference record. The Statesmen, who are 4-2 overall, have scored 15 goals in the five games while allowing just four.

Webster will be one of the conference teams who will be competing in the 57th Annual CYC/Bob Guelker Memorial Tournament. The 34-team tournament began on Monday and runs through Saturday. The Statesmen will compete in the Msgr. Louis Meyer Division as will Kirkwood. Seckman will play in the Msgr. Lloyd Sullivan Division.

Kirkwood has played five consecutive games decided by a single goal. After three straight tough losses, the Pioneers bounced back last week with a 3-2 win over Fox, and a 2-1 win over Webster Groves. Sophomore forward Eric McWoods has a team-best 11 goals along with four assists for 26 points to lead the Pioneers.

Parkway North is 2-1 in conference play, though 4-6 overall. The Vikings do not play again until Friday at University City at 4:15 p.m. Senior Justin Rosenthal has been solid in goal, allowing just 1.2 goals per game, while Marcos Rizas-Middleton leads the offense in goals, assists and points.

Seckman sophomore Alison Szydlowski has played a major role in the Seckman softball resurgence. The Jaguars defeated Webster Groves last Thursday for their fifth straight victory as Szydlowski went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and four runs scored. Szydlowski had another home run and five RBI in a 10-0 win over Kirkwood last Tuesday.

For the season, Szydlowski is batting a team-leading .538 with 21 hits and 14 RBIs. The Jaguars are tied with Rockwood Summit for first place in the Suburban South at 2-0.

Patch Suburban South Boys Athlete of The Week

Parkway Central cross country runner Eric Sivill is in the middle of what will seemingly be a memorable senior season. Sivill’s time of 15:52 set a new school mark at the Forest Park Festival; the mark had been held by Billy Bell who ran a 16:02 in 2003.

Sivill then won the Parkway Central Invitational last Thursday with a time of 16:31.60 as the Colts finished second as a team with 99 points.
