Parkway West Falls Flat at Seckman

Jaguars running back Blake Pepper scores four touchdowns in Seckman's 35-0 win over Parkway West.

Seckman was looking for its first victory of the 2011 season against Parkway West (1-2) on Friday night. West had a two-game losing streak.

Seckman coasted to an unexpected 35-0 home victory.

The Seckman Jaguars handed the Parkway West Longhorns their 3rd straight loss with 5 unanswered touchdowns on their way to a 35-0 shutout victory.

Seckman head coach, Joel Critchlow, said, “ We watched them (Parkway West) on film and knew they were a good club.  We did not play up to our potential the first 2 games of the season.  Tonight, the kids never lost focus, they each did their jobs and the outcome took care of itself.”

Ed Carter of Parkway West mishandled the opening kickoff return, causing the Longhorns to start their first possession deep in their own territory.  The Seckman defense easily prevented West from gaining any ground, and West was forced to punt.

During the first quarter, Parkway West had their chances to score.  With about 6:49 to go, the Longhorns were near their own 25 yard line.  Senior quarterback, J. C. Demuri took the snap, turned and attempted a backward lateral to his running back, Ed Carter.  Unfortunately, the ball was mishandled causing a 14-yard loss on the play, and the Longhorns were forced to punt.  This mistake cost them dearly.

With the ball sitting on the 35-yard line of the Longhorns, senior quarterback Jeff Dattoli simply handed the ball to the 5-7, 155 pound senior running back and Pepper ran 35 yards untouched into the end zone for the Jaguars first of five touchdowns in the game.  Blake raved about his teammates, “I just believe in my teammates.  I believe the offense will be there when the time comes.  We are all brothers and we help each other out.  I could not do it without them.”

Blake Pepper scored his second (of four)  touchdowns of the night midway through the 2nd quarter on a quick slant from 2 yards out increasing the gap by a score of 14-0.

Early in the third quarter, Blake Pepper galloped for a 53-yard touchdown run for his third touchdown, and the crowd went wild.  But, they were quickly silenced by a Jaguar penalty. On the very next play, Blake scored his third touchdown in grand style by hauling in a 52-yard throw by senior Jeff Dattoli. Pepper scored his fourth (and last) touchdown later in the third quarter on a quick, 5-yard rush while carrying 2 Longhorn defenders with him. The Jaguars’ last score came early in the 4th quarter on Jeff Dattoli’s  7-yard laser-guided pass to his senior tight end, Zach Martin. The final score was 35-0.

Parkway West had their opportunities to score.  Senior running back, Ed Carter, rushed for 38 yards on 11 carries, and added 2 kickoff returns for 41 yards.  The 6-2, 225-pound senior running back/defensive end, Rane Eskelsen led the Parkway defense.  Eskelsen had 4 carries for 12 yards, 3 receptions for 27 yards, 3 tackles (including a quarterback sack).

But, Seckman’s defense rose to the task every time.  The 6-0, 165-pound senior linebacker Zayne Tindall led the Jaguar charge with 6 tackles and 2 assists.  His linemate, senior linebacker Kyle Rose added his own 4 tackles, 1 assist and twice tackling the Longhorns’ quarterback for losses.

Parkway West was severely hampered by penalties and turnovers throughout the game (8 penalties for 70 yards and 4 fumbles) early on. Their first three possessions of the game started with 1st and 15, due to mental mistakes. Head coach, Jeff Duncan, said, “We will have to fight harder to stay focused. My hat’s off to Seckman, though.  They made the big plays when they had to.”

Parkway’s biggest obstacle was the senior running back for Seckman, Blake Pepper.  Pepper scored 4 (of the 5) Seckman touchdowns on amazing runs of 2, 5, 35 and 52 yards.  Blake also added 5 solo tackles and 2 assists on the defensive side of the ball.  Coach Critchlow said of Blake’s performance, “Blake is a ‘college-level’ running back, that’s for sure.  That kid is tough as nails.  He does anything that is asked of him.”

Parkway West will have their own battle next Friday against their counter-parts at Parkway Central.
