Parkway Artists' Work on Display at Queeny Park

The Parkway School District art show is Saturday and Sunday at Queeny Park.

elementary, middle and high school students have a chance to show off what they've done in their art classes this weekend.

The annual district-wide art show will showcase art from every grade level and every Parkway school on Saturday and Sunday. "You can see a spiraling of art skills and the wide variety of creativity that abounds in Parkway," district Fine Arts Coordinator Cassandra Collins said of the annual event. Last year, the work of about 6,000 students was displayed, Collins said.

The show will feature art in a variety of mediums, including drawing, painting, ceramics, weaving and textiles. The work will be on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Greensfelder Recreation Complex in , 550 Weidman Rd., Manchester.

Collins said that the show will be divided into quadrants based on region—the north, south, west and central portions of the district. Last year, about 3,000 people came to the show, she said.

"The kids are so proud," Collins said. "They bring their parents and take their picture in front of their artwork."

Pieces are selected for the show throughout the school year by art teachers. Collins said teachers try to select some of the best work that is representative of their classes. The art selected typically shows good craftsmanship or is especially creative. Often, some of the high schoolers' work has appeared in judged art competitions, or their work has earned them a scholarship to an art school.

"We try to make a list of accomplishments that we hand out at the door, so you can see how talented Parkway kids are," Collins said.

The free event usually draws art teachers, students, family members and more. Sometimes, Collins said, people out for a run in the park will just drop in for a spell to see what's going on. It's a particularly good event for young children, she said.

"The little ones can see what the older artists are doing, and they have something to aspire to and can get ideas of things they would like to do themselves," Collins said.
