Finding Faith in America's Founding -They Don’t Teach This Stuff In School, But They Should

St. Louis Vacation Liberty School is returning this year in a new location, on Westminster Christian Academy’s campus in Town & Country the week of June 18-22, 2012.  VLS is a week-long, half-day program designed for children entering grades 5 through 8.  Started by a 9-12 (9 Principles, 12 Values) group in Kentucky in 2010, the curriculum was picked up by a 9-12 group of women in west county who received tremendous positive response to the idea as they worked on various political campaigns that year. The creators of the school believe America is floundering because we have taken faith out of our schools and our history.  If the next generation is to help restore America to her true course, they must learn how faith is inseparably tied to the founding principles of personal liberty and economic freedom, and our own individual responsibility for guarding these freedoms.

The first St Louis VLS was held in June 2011 at Gateway Academy. The school moved to Westminster Christian Academy after Gateway closed last year. The program is staffed entirely by volunteers which include teachers, ministers, nurses, moms and high school students. In addition to gaining an understanding of the United States as a unique experiment in liberty, VLS teaches children about true hope (not wishful thinking) and the role of personal charity in the life of every American. They learn the role of faith in the Revolutionary War, discover the Black Robe Brigade, the story of the Constitutional Convention, what “equal justice” really means and explore the balance between liberty and tyranny.

Finally, participants experience the principles of capitalism by earning tokens throughout the week in games that simulate how the economy works. Tokens can then be exchanged for items in the school store. This reinforces the source, purpose and true value of money. The lessons are brought alive through classroom discussions, historic presentations, and fun games and activities. The cost is $65.00 per student. Scholarships are available.

The St. Louis VLS has also helped launch three additional VLS programs in Texas this year and continues to provide guidance and marketing materials to groups around the country who are interested in starting their own local Vacation Liberty School.
