June's Green Speaker Series speaker will be Tim Busse, Town Architect of New Town at St. Charles. Tim will talk on New Urbanism, an urban design movement which promotes walkable neighborhoods that contain a range of housing and job types. It arose in the United States in the early 1980s, and has gradually continued to reform many aspects of real estate development, urban planning, and municipal land-use strategies. New Urbanism is strongly influenced by urban design standards that were prominent until the rise of the automobile in the mid-20th century. Its aims include reducing traffic congestion, increasing the supply of affordable housing, and reining in suburban sprawl.
New Town at St. Charles is a local example of a New Urban community. Other examples in the US include Seaside, Florida, Disney's Celebration, Florida, South Main in Buena Vista, Colorado, and Mesa del Sol, New Mexico.
Tim will discuss the basic tenets and green benefits of New Urbanism at 7 pm on June 21st at Longview Farm Park at 13525 Clayton Road, Town & Country, MO 63141. The talk will last no longer than an hour, and is free and open to the public.
