Barretts Elementary Teacher Achieves National Board Certification
Three Parkway School District teachers received the certification after meeting high standards set by the National Board for Professional Teaching.
Shannon Harmon, a fifth-grade teacher at school and two other Parkway School District teachers recently were recently certified as part of the National Board of Certified Teachers, according to a Parkway press release.
The certification is obtained after completion of a voluntary assessment program which recognizes “effective and accomplished teachers who meet high standards based on what teachers should know and be able to do.”The certification complements the teacher’s state license and it is valid for 10 years.
The other two teachers recognized are Amy Gregory, music teacher at and Debbie Banashek-Twist, communication arts teacher .
The teachers are evaluated on the following five core propositions:
- Teachers are committed to students and their learning.
- Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.
- Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning.
- Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.
- Teachers are members of learning communities.
“These teachers worked incredibly hard on their portfolios and poured their hearts into their work,” said Brandon Jamieson, science teacher who works to support candidates for National Board Certification in a press release.
