Spring into Action: Exterior Home Care Tips Bring in the Spring Selling Season

Your home has weathered a record-breaking winter of snow and ice. You survived the Polar Vortex and now it’s time to come out of hibernation and prepare your home for the spring selling season, while addressing any damage that old man winter left behind.

”If you are planning on selling or staying put for a while, now is the time to make repairs before any further damage occurs,” said Jim Dohr, president of Coldwell Banker Gundaker. “Plus, for home sellers, updates made now could help avoid any red flags later on a buyer inspection.”

Here are a few things to add to your to do list:

Inspect the roof. The harsh winter weather was beating on your roof. Using binoculars go around your house and look for broken shingles and loose metal flashing.  If you see a leak, look for its source. Check the attic for signs of moisture. Call a local roof expert to make any needed repairs.

Check fences, driveway and paths for damage. Take a walk around your home, and look for signs of damage on the driveway and walkway, as well as the foundation, fences and gates. Replace missing or rotted gate slats. Fix driveway cracks, holes and gaps with a crack sealer before they expand further. Then, reseal the driveway.

Check window and door seals. Extreme cold can cause weather sealants to crack leaving these areas vulnerable to leaks. Re-caulk around the window frame filling-in any gaps in the cracked caulk. This is also a good time to swap out the storm panels with screens.

Clean the siding. Power wash the exterior of your house to remove grime. Check for any areas that need re-painting. This will freshen up the exterior and add to its curb appeal.
