Manchester Reducing Sewer Rates For Residents

It will cost less for the city to come out to a resident's home and investigate sewer issues beginning January 1.

Monday night, the Manchester Board of Aldermen unanimously voted to reduce sewer lateral application fees for residents from $500 to $250. The sewer application fee is the cost the resident pays for the city to come out and investigate any sewer issues.

A sewer lateral is the section of pipe from the the foundation wall of a resident's home to the main sewer in the street or wherever the mainline sewer is located. This section is sometimes referred to as the “public” side.  The sewer lateral is the responsibiity of the residents to maintain and repair. However, the city of Manchester pays up to $6,000 of the repair cost for sewer lateral repairs.

Alderwoman Marilyn Ottenad said the city will have $547,000 in the city's sanitary sewer repair fund for 2012. She explained that money must be used for sanitary sewer issues so she suggested the city use the funds to help residents.
