Cold And Allergy Drug Prescription Vote Likely Monday in Manchester

Manchester aldermen could vote Monday on whether or not to require a prescription to purchase pseudoephedrine products from pharmacies in the city.

Pseudoephedrine, the key ingredient used to make methamphetamine, is often taken by cold and allergy sufferers and found in many popular over the counter drugs, including Sudafed, Claritin-D, Allegra-D and Zyrtec-D. 

Currently, those drugs are behind the pharmacist's counter and an ID is required to buy them, Aldermen deferred a vote on the ordinance at the Oct. 1 meeting, saying they wanted to hear both sides of the argument before making a decision on the matter.

Manchester's proposed ordinance includes an exemption, similar to the one in St. Charles County's ordinance, that allows pseudoephederin products that cannot be converted into meth to be sold without a prescription. 

If the ordinance passes, it will not go into effect until Nov. 15.

Also Monday night, aldermen will hear from Brian Kulick of Juneau Engineers, the company hired by the City of Manchester to prepare paperwork to acquire funding for the Hanna Road Project. The project includes work on 1.8 miles of Hanna Road from Manchester Road to Big Bend Road. As previously reported by Patch,  . Previously, Kulick said installing a crosswalk at Hanna Woods Elementary School would likely be part of the Hanna Road Project that could be covered by grant money.

The city will also evaluate the city's confidential document shredding program and determine how often the event needs to be held. It is currently being held once a month at Paul Schroeder Park.
