Clayton Road Project Update: History Unearthed, Rain Impact

The soggy weather has been a setback for construction of the Clayton Road Trail Project, but Department of Public Works Director Craig Wilde said crews are still hard at work. He also said an apparent 19th century limestone foundation was recently unearthed, which will likely affect the initial construction plan.

Wilde released the following email update on the Clayton Road Trail Project. 

We have continued to work every day we can.  The soggy weather is keeping us from being as productive as we would like with the grading.  Although you have not seen as much progress as we had hoped on the project site, we have still been busy working on numerous details.

As luck would have it, we have unearthed a limestone foundation that appears to date from the 19th century. We have engaged Burns and McDonnell to evaluate the foundation and the site to determine its historical significance. Once they have completed their initial review, a Cultural Resource Assessment will be sent to MO Dept of Natural Resources for comment.

It is unclear at this time what the outcome of that assessment will be.  Most likely, we will be looking at ways to modify the project so as not to disturb this asset in any additional manner. Once this report is ready, I will post it on our website. 

We will continue to work on some of the “peripheral” items over the coming weeks. The garden wall near the entrance of Town & Country Lane as well as various pieces of sidewalk, access ramps and drainage facilities are in various stages of development/installation. There is some vegetation which still needs to be removed near the eastern end of the project, but for the most part, this portion of the project is complete.

The grading operations are starting to develop the trail alignment picture much more clearly.  The rock base has been installed in many locations.  This can give you a good idea of what the lines and grades are going to be.

The City of Town and Country has also created a Facebook page to update residents regularly on Clayton Road and trail construction.

The first phase includes resurfacing on Clayton Road beginning at Highway 141 and going to Oak Springs Lane. It also includes the construction of the Clayton Road Trail, a pedestrian walkway, from  to Oak Springs Lane.

The contractor also has the option to do some night paving. Wilde said more specific information, including overnight work, will be released shortly so residents are aware of any disruptions that may occur.
