Second Creve Coeur Lake Plane Crash Victim Dies

Russell Hazelton, the pilot of that plane died shortly after the plane crashed into Creve Coeur Lake in Maryland Heights last Wednesday.

A spokesperson with DePaul Hospital tells Patch, Russell's wife Suzanne, the only passenger in the  around 5:30 p.m. Monday.

As previously reported by Patch, Suzanne had been critically injured in the crash. She and her husband Russell were headed to the airport in Creve Coeur when the plane went down.

which is less than a mile from Creve Coeur Airport.

When in St. Louis, the Hazeltons lived in the Fairfield neighborhood in Town and Country. Their neighbors there tell Patch, Russell was a retired TWA pilot and the couple split their time between St. Louis, Vermont and Pennsylvania. 

The Hazeltons' Town and Country neighbors previously told Patch this crash would affect the entire neighborhood. They said the couple was very active and well-liked in their condominium community.

Neighbors tell Patch Tuesday morning that they have not heard any details on funeral arrangements. However, residents previously stated that most of the Hazeltons' family was in the Northeast so they thought services might be held in that part of the country.

As previously reported by Patch, Maryland Heights Deputy Chief Bill Carson said rescue crews made valiant attempts to save the couple's life. 

He said Maryland Heights police officers were waist-deep in water while holding the wing of the aircraft afloat so it wouldn't sink into deeper waters while other emergency crews arrived. He said the cockpit was underwater when police first arrived and both passengers had been underwater for several minutes.

Russell Hazelton was not breathing when rescue crews removed him from the cockpit. But initial CPR attempts were successful as Carson said Hazelton was breathing when he got to the  hospital.
