Arrest in Connection to Attempted Walmart Theft and Police Chase

Police said the man sped and weaved in and out of traffic on Highway 40 after fleeing the Chesterfield Valley Walmart. Town and Country police were involved in the pursuit.

The following information was supplied by local police and court documents. It does not indicate a conviction where an arrest was made.

A man eluded numerous police departments, including Town and Country, during a high-speed car chase earlier this month. Chesterfield police said the pursuit ensued after the man allegedly tried to steal a television from Walmart, however he was later arrested in Cahokia, IL.

Darius Dean, 32, of East St. Louis, was charged Nov. 2 with felony stealing and resisting arrest, creating a substantial risk of serious injury or death.

Chesterfield Police said Walmart security spotted Dean wheeling a box for a 32-inch screen TV into the store at 100 THF Boulevard at about 3:28 p.m. Nov. 1. The box was empty. He replaced it in the shopping cart with a 47-inch Vizio TV valued at $698 and walked out of the store.

When he was approached by a Walmart security guard, Dean abandoned the cart, fled on foot and got into a dark Chevrolet Impala, according to police.

The man reportedly led Chesterfield officers on a high-speed chase down THF Boulevard and Interstate 64, speeding and weaving in and out of traffic. Police lost contact with the car.

As previously reported by Patch, a Town and Country officer joined the pursuit to assist Missouri State Highway Patrol as the car made its way through Town and Country along Highway 40. The officer continued tracking the car until it went into Illinois.

Dean was arrested later in Cahokia as a passenger in the same car, police said.

Bond was set at $15,000.
