Crash Closes Lanes, Injures One at I-270 and Highway 40

Police said one person was critically injured in a crash that backed up traffic during rush hour at I-270 and Hwy 40.

The exit ramp from Interstate 270 to Highway 40 was partially closed around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday due to a multi-car crash.

The ramp has since reopened.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report, six vehicles were involved in the accident that sent four people to area hospitals.

Captain Gary Hoelzer tells Patch the crash occurred on northbound I-270 in the lane that goes west onto Hwy 40. One person was critically injured, Hoelzer said.

According to the crash report, three people suffered minor injuries and Kevin Frazier, 20, of Oakville suffered serious injuries and was taken to  in Creve Coeur.

Investigators said in the report that all vehicles were traveling northbound on I-270. Five cars had stopped for traffic and were all in the same lane approaching the ramp onto Highway 40. A sixth vehicle, a 2007 Ford F450 truck, did not stop in time and and crashed into the back of Frazier's car, causing a chain reaction.

 fire and rescue crews were called to the scene.

"There was one person trapped and he was extricated and transported to a local trauma center for what you can call life threatening injuries," Deputy Chief Jeff Sadtler.
