Scire Zeroes in on Women's Soccer Milestone

Webster University Women's Soccer Coach, with one of the highest win percentagea in NCAA III history, nears 200 win milestone.

Sometime this season, hopefully sooner than later for the Webster University women’s soccer team, Luigi Scire will pick up his 200th career win, all as head coach of the Gorloks.  Scire, who begins the 2012 campaign with 197 wins, is among the leaders in the NCAA’s highest winning percentages in several categories.

Scire (pronounced ‘shur-ray’) started the women’s program in 1999 and hit the ground running as the team went 15-4-1 in its inaugural season.  The team upped its winning ways the following two years, going 17-2-2 and 18-1-1, giving it a 50-7-1 start out of the gate.  Seasons like these have helped Scire’s teams build up some staggering statistics in his 13 years at the helm.

He personally holds several places in the NCAA and NCAA III coaches’ record book.  With a career winning percentage of .761 (197-58-11), Scire is 21st among all active NCAA coaches and 26th all-time.  In the NCAA III, he is 13th among active coaches and ranks 15th all-time.  Having coached a relatively ‘modest’ number of seasons at 13, Scire is already 52nd on the NCAA all-time win list with his 197 wins.  In addition, Scire has been named the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference 'Coach of the Year' five times.

Scire’s teams have posted some eye-popping stats.  Among those are a 58-game unbeaten and a 44-game win streak in conference.  Defensively his 2001 squad only allowed eight goals for the season and had 13 shutouts, but on the offensive side several teams have registered pinball scoring numbers.  Twice teams have scored 100+ goals and averaged five goals a game in a season, both making the NCAA record book.  His teams have scored over 75 goals in four other seasons as well.

While winning at a healthy rate, his teams have consistently been recognized for their academic prowess.  The Webster women’s soccer team has received the Team Academic Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America 12 straight years.  The team had a 3.5 cumulative GPA this past year, the 46th highest average out of the 568 colleges awarded at all NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA levels nationwide.

Scire modestly noted, “We have been fortunate to consistently field teams with quality players who are excellent students, and good citizens as well.  Many have gone on to have successful careers and can look back with pride on their years as a Gorlok.”

The Gorloks open the 2012 season with six straight games at the newly renovated St. Louis Soccer Park, giving Scire a good opportunity to post win #200 at home.  Webster's home opener is on August 31 vs. Whitman College (CA) at 7:30 pm.
