Should you feel bad about being under-employed?

Not caving into family and friends, while keeping the job you love. Is there really a choice?

Is having a masters degree and working in construction a bad thing? Not unless you're unhappy about it. A reader is constantly getting concerned looks from family and friends because he is "under-employed." But he made the move by choice!

Tired of rude kids in the classroom, he gave up teaching for life on the forklift, and loves it! He gets to work outside, use his hands, and get some exercise...instead of standing in front of a class full of kids all day long. But he wonders if he should feel sorry for himself because everyone else does.

Look, you made the choice, and you can always go back to teaching if you want to. Or, you can find some other use for your masters degree. But giving up a job you love because of what other people think would be the absolute wrong thing to do. If your family and friends aren't supportive, it's their problem, not yours. They can come around...or not. It doesn't really matter. Keep digging that dirt, as long as you're happy.
