A Summertime of Fun in Manchester

If the cost of gas is eating into your summer activity budget, don't sweat it. There's plenty of fun to be had right here in Manchester!

Ah, summertime...the best time of the year. School is out, the pools are open and there are so many fun things to see and do. Cardinals baseball, outdoor concerts at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater (although it will always be "Riverport" to me), fireworks under the Arch, Six Flags, the list goes on.

In my younger days, I loved all of these things, and the bigger the crowd, the better. Rubbing elbows with the sweating masses, paying an obscene amount of money for beer that immediately turned tepid in 95 degree heat, idling in line waiting to pay $20 for the privilege of parking on a steaming hot asphalt lot...good times!

But now that I'm more "mature," or maybe I'm just not willing to take out a second mortgage to fill up my gas tank  every three days, I tend to search for fun closer to home.

Luckily, I live in Manchester, and there will plenty of things to see and do in this summer. Home to the , volleyball and basketball courts, a great walking path and track, a wonderful playground and the brand new . The park has something for everyone.  The pool is open, day camps and swimming lessons are underway, and later this month, the ballfields will be transformed into a campground, complete with a campfire dinner and s'mores.  There will be movies and concerts in the park, fireworks on the 4th of July, a movie IN the pool, countless barbecues, and volleyball, baseball and frisbee golf games galore.

And in September, the Manchester Homecoming markes the "official" end of summer in this town, featuring lots of outdoor concerts and entertainment, great food, amusement park rides and games and affordable cold beverages.  All within walking distance, in case gas really does top $5 a gallon this summer.  And yes, I will be climbing onto that really scary ride with all the fearless teenagers and hollering at the top of my lungs as it threatens to hurl me out of the park and onto Manchester Road.

Come to think of it, maybe I'm not all that "mature" after all.  Maybe I'm just a little bit older and a lot wiser!
