Five Reasons You Should Upgrade to a Larger Home

These days, the common advice is to buy smaller homes. Many people claim they are cheaper or easier to maintain but none of these reasons are necessarily true. Instead, focus on the things that will make you happy. Here are five reasons you should consider a larger home.

Wide Open Spaces

Many of us like room to breathe. Is it important to you to have a choice of areas to curl up and read a good book? Would you like room for many pieces of nice furniture or are you content with less? Learn what makes you most comfortable.

Room for the Kids

If you have or are planning a family, keep in mind that more room can reduce family strife. A larger house means your kids can listen to their music or have their own play areas without distracting you. Privacy is another advantage – your teenagers will eventually demand it.

No Additions

Many people in small homes add extra rooms as the need for more space grows. Building an addition may not add value to a home, especially if it is poorly planned or looks like it has been ‘tacked on.’ In addition, you will be spending about as much as you would if you had a slightly larger mortgage on a bigger house and you will have to live with the mess and inconvenience of construction. You might find it is easier and cheaper to upgrade instead.

Entertaining

If you love to throw parties or have large family holidays, you should definitely consider a larger home. Many of us know the pain of a standing room only Christmas dinner.

You will enjoy entertaining much more in a larger home and your guests will be happier. In addition, you could offer overnight guests the comforts of their own bedroom rather than a lumpy pullout mattress.

Space for Work and Play

Would a home office keep the stack of bills and paperwork off the kitchen table? Do you have activities that could use their own room, like arts, crafts, gaming or music? You can close the door on the mess when you are not working on it, keep kids and pets out and decorate the room to inspire.

If you are considering a new home, trust your instincts. After all, you are the one who will live there, so you need to make sure you will be happy.
