Want Some Unusual Plants? Go to a Plant Sale!

If you want some unusual plants for your garden, where should you go? A local plant sale of course! Many are scheduled in the next few weeks- grab a friend, hop in the car and make a day out of it!

If you love to garden, you also love plant shopping.  I could spend days driving far and wide to find a great plant sale.  After all, people who love plants and strive to see their customers pick the perfect plant for their gardens usually sponsor these sales.   There are many coming up in the next few weeks- why not make plans with a gardening buddy to spend the day and check the sales out!  All of the plant sales listed would greatly appreciate if you would bring your own boxes to take your treasures home in.  Most accept cash and checks, only a few take credit cards, so plan accordingly.

APRIL 26th TO APRIL 28TH is the 10th annual “Herb Days” plant sale at the Ridgeway Center at Missouri Botanical Gardens.  As the name implies, herbs of all types will be for sale.  The sale begins on Thursday at noon and continues until Saturday.  Find more information on the garden at www.missouribotanicalgarden.org.

APRIL 26TH AND APRIL 27TH is the annual plant sale at Meramec Community College.  I take a greenhouse class at Meramec and I can attest to the HUGE selection of quality plants for sale.  Annuals, perennials, shrubs, roses, peonies and so much more will be for sale.  The sale begins at 8am on the Meramec campus on Big Bend.

APRIL 28th is the West County Daylily Sale at Missouri Botanical Garden.  It begins at 9am and runs until 5pm.  As the name says, they’ll have daylilies!  Check out the botanical garden website for more information.

APRIL 28TH is the 2nd year of the St. Louis Master Gardeners plant sale at South County Tech.  The greenhouse is behind the South County Tech campus on West Watson Road in Sunset Hills.  I have been volunteering at the greenhouse since it became available in the fall of 2010 and I promise that you’ll find great annuals, perennials, tropical, succulents, herbs and vegetables.  Funds and plant material benefit many local organizations. For more info visit www.stlmg.com.

Plants that have been grown in a greenhouse need some special care.  For more information about acclimating them to their new environment, see .
