Holiday Light Recycling Drive

You can easily recycle your non-working holiday lights.

Are you are finally through with those non working strands of holiday lights or my favorite, the half working strand? Time to recycle; no don’t just throw them away. There is more there that can be reused than you may think, and I am sure there is a collection box near you.

Send them to school with your kids; there is a collection box at all Parkway Schools, as well as Car X, Batteries Plus, Scottrade and among others. See Holiday Light Recycling Drive for a complete list of collection locations.

By recycling those old lights, you help two good causes; Operation Food Search and St Louis Green.com.  And, of course, you keep those lights out of the landfill. Last year 32,000 pounds were diverted from the landfill.  The goal this year is for 50,000 pounds.

It is amazing to see how many people, when aware, will take the steps to recycle. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and maybe even a little Reconsider what you buy when there is excessive packaging. This drive is a good and easy way to tackle this small task. A small task that adds up to a big pile of lights, recycled and disposed of properly.

When you replace the worn out strands, consider the LED selections. I have found them to be durable and time will tell if they last longer as I suspect they will. They seem to be safer too because they do not produce as much heat, they are not hot to touch.

I have cycled LED’s into just about all of my holiday lighting. I know I am saving energy and I feel a little better about this holiday indulgence that now uses less energy. I know that during the holidays, I will be using less energy as well. A little laying around, have a fire, watch it snow, relax with my kids; enjoy your time as well.
